2023: Scania Battery Assembly - a new landmark
The investments in Scania's electrification journey were truly ramped up this year, with a brand new 18,000 square metre battery assembly plant in Södertälje. Scania already invested heavily in electrification projects in 2021, building an end-to-end electrification competence in the Stockholm region. Carried out in partnership with new Swedish battery supplier Northvolt, the project was financed through proceeds from Scania’s Green Bond. The new state-of-the-art factory assembled heavy-duty battery cells into modules and packs for heavy trucks and buses. The packs were designed with life capacity to power vehicles for 1,5 million kilometres and make regional traffic possible with zero emissions. To intensify battery testing and tailored deployment, Scania also built a new battery laboratory at the research and development facilities in Södertälje.
