1980: Introducing the GPRT range
Scania introduces the GPRT range (2-series) – the company’s first entirely modularised product range. The range is based on far-reaching modularisation not only of engines, gearboxes, propeller shafts and final gears, but also chassis components such as axles, frames and especially cabs. This enables Scania to respond to market demands for solutions tailored to different transport needs, while simultaneously paving the way for more economical production. Using a limited number of components, Scania can build an almost unlimited number of truck variants. As a result, customers are offered greater variety, while the number of parts and components needed for the full cab range shrinks by 70 percent. The number of sheet metal parts, which requires expensive investments in press tools, is reduced to a minimum and average working hours per cab drop by about 30 percent. Instrumental in giving the 2-series a unique character is Giorgio Giugiaro of Italdesign, a wunderkind in automotive styling at the time.

Local operator Nordmarkens Automobiltrafik in the westernmost part of Sweden takes delivery of the first bus built in the country. -
