While most airports around the world are suffering, Belgian Liège Airport is thriving with increasing air freight shipments. As Europe’s seventh largest cargo airport, it handles 2,500 tonnes of freight from 140 flights every day.

In the future, every transport can be electric. And for a more sustainable world, most must. But replacing a diesel truck with an electrified is more than simply exchanging an old vehicle for a new.

Earlier this autumn Scania introduced its first commercial electric truck range, a milestone in its aim to be leading in the transition to a sustainable transport system. And from now on Scania will launch new electrical trucks and buses every year. Meet some of the young, dedicated experts who make this transition possible.

Scania’s cab production plant in Oskarshamn, Sweden, enters 2021 as fully fossil free. It will thereby be the first of its major production plants around the world to successfully phase out carbon emitting production elements.

The new-generation Scania buses and coaches feature completely redesigned driver areas with improved ergonomics, safety, comfort, and driveability.

Designing the new L-cab with the City Door has been a demanding challenge for Scania’s engineers. How do you ensure safety when a crucial part of the cab body structure that has already been verified through simulation and physical crash testing is to be replaced?

Few have the opportunity to see their Master’s theses come to fruition. Development Engineer Christine Eriksson at Scania customised truck development is a privileged exception. Together with former fellow student and current colleague Anna Tisell, she in 2017 developed the concept for what has now been launched as the City Door.

City buses must be equally comfortable for passengers in biting cold and in scorching heat. Scania has therefore subjected its new generation Scania Citywide buses to some of the most adverse climate conditions on earth.

Before introduced to customers, Scania’s new generation city buses undergo rigorous testing of the typical challenges that they will face in everyday operations. Buses are loaded with weights to simulate maximum passenger capacity and subsequently subjected to obstacles that are commonplace.

For bus operators, fuel is one of the main costs. This makes it essential to choose the right bus for each operation.

Scania’s new Electric Active Steering (EAS) gives the driver better control over the vehicle’s position when manoeuvring in narrow spaces, meanwhile increasing stability at high speeds. It also enables several new driver assistance functions that add comfort during long drives, such as assisting the driver with keeping the vehicle centred in lane.

When emotion meets logic, reads Scania’s V8 slogan. That is unquestionably true at Swedish haulier Wobbes, which operates a Scania 650 S equipped with a wood chipper. In the woods and forests of western Sweden, Wobbes blood red Scania trucks efficiently gulp heaps of twigs and branches before spraying chips into the tipper unit and trailer.

Getting around Stockholm by conventional public transport can easily take an hour. Built on 14 islands, bus routes are long and circuitous. Stockholmers are therefore making increasing use of commuter boats, whereby the one-hour commute might take as little as three minutes. These operations have gradually been expanded and the latest addition is the three diesel electric sister vessels Clara, Maria and Sofia.

Tina Tizro used to work as a flow controller in Supply Chain Network in Södertälje. But this spring, her career path changed. “I was lucky enough to be accepted as one of the candidates to Scania’s front-end-developer-programme.”

With its versatile use as both a tractor and truck, here are almost no assignment that Swiss haulier Herrmann Transporte cannot carry out with the new Scania G 500 4x4.

Scania enters the ring with a heavyweight contender for the mining and heavy construction industries that will immediately go for knock. Weighing in at an exceptional Gross Vehicle Weight of 69 tonnes, the Scania G 540 10x4/6 XT Heavy Tipper will substantially reduce costs and increase productivity for operators in these businesses.

At Scania’s production units in Södertälje alone, it is estimated that there are more than 2,000 lifting devices, such as cranes and hoists. Each of these must be regularly inspected and serviced to ensure safety, sound ergonomics and compliance with legislation.

For half a century, spaghetti diagrams have been utilised to chart the movement of operators on the factory floor. This common method enhances not only efficiency but also helps ensure sound ergonomic practices. Avoiding wasteful, unnecessary and cumbersome movement is key in achieving lean production processes.

Nowadays, real-time location systems are taken for granted, accurately pinpointing our precise whereabouts on and off roads. Similar benefits can be obtained in tracking forklifts in the production area. However, common geo-spatial GPS systems are more or less useless behind thick walls.

Scania’s Smart Factory Lab is an in-house incubator that tests and trials new technologies that can enhance production efficiency. Following limited trials managed by the Lab, successful new devices and methods can gainfully be implemented throughout Scania’s global production system.

Scania has quality assurance checks in place at every stage in production. The drawback is that rectifying mistakes is costly. By making use of Computer Vision, Scania is now piloting the technology at its production units in the Netherlands.

Benefiting from 108-point checks, a “Scania Talent” program and an interior UV treatment, Scania Benelux sees an upswing in used trucks sales. “We see a lot of happy customers that come back to expand or renew their fleet,” says Bram Stakenburg, responsible for used trucks in Benelux.

When this season ends in November, captain Reino Nurmi will have transported some 450,000 cubic metres of wood in Finland’s Lake Saimaa with his faithful tugboat M/A Olli. That equals some 8,000 truckloads. During Nurmi’s 46th season, Olli’s Scania 16-litre DI16 engine will accumulate more than 3,000 operational hours.

Since early July, the first German electric road test track near Frankfurt with catenary overhead lines is fully operational with five Scania R 450 hybrid trucks equipped with pantographs. The last of the five trucks was recently delivered to the German building materials supplier company Knauf.

PepsiCo in Brazil has acquired 18 compressed gas vehicles from Scania, the largest order to date of gas trucks in the country.
