Taking safety to heart

06 MAY 2020

Scania in Denmark has just delivered a Scania R 520 to Kim Ancker Transport with a sticker that states that the truck is equipped with a defibrillator, a heart starter. There are very special reasons for that.

In 2018, Ancker experienced a truly horrible incident when an oncoming driver lost his life following cardiac arrest. He never wants that to happen ever again and therefore when ordering his new truck decided to equip the vehicle with a heart starter.

“I see this as a bit of a game changer especially in less-populated areas where many drivers pass,” says Allan Lassen from Red-Liv, a Danish first aid training institute, who also serves as an advisor for Scania Danmark’s Driver Academy.

“Normally, its takes longer for help to arrive in these places but if the driver with a defibrillator is registered with the Danish TrygFonden foundation as a Heart Runner, he or she will immediately be alerted via an app. A swift response is crucial to saving lives.”

One of Denmark’s safest trucks

It is clearly evident that Ancker cares about safety in other ways, as well. His Scania V8 R 520 8x2 has eight mounted exterior cameras that feed images to three monitors in the cab. In addition, the truck is equipped with Scania’s Blind Spot Detection, Scania Opticruise with clutch-on-demand, Adaptive Cruise Control with Active Prediction and retarder, electronic parking brake with hill hold and Lane Departure Warning. With all of these features, Ancker boasts one of Denmark’s safest trucks.

Not surprisingly with this level of engagement, two years ago his small haulage business was recognised as “Transport Company of the Year” by the Danish Transport and Logistics Association, expressly for his road safety efforts .
