Why a roadshow? So you can experience battery-electric vehicles for yourself

Now, Scania’s customers in all of Europe can discover the battery-electric (BEV) driving experience. Between August and December this year, a convoy of six Scania electric trucks will make its way to 13 stops across Europe, covering more than 20,000 kilometres.

Scania’s E-mobility roadshow is a unique initiative; never before have so many different types of battery-electric trucks been showcased to such a wide variety of customers across Europe.

And they’re not just being showcased. The idea is for as many people as possible to get behind the wheel of a Scania battery-electric vehicle and experience what it’s like to drive one.

A chance to get the “wow” feeling

“We want as many people as possible to experience what it’s like to drive an electric truck – seeing is believing,” says Alexandra Österplan, E-mobility stream leader at Scania. “From experience, we know that many get a real ‘wow’ feeling the first time they drive a battery-electric truck, and that’s a feeling we want to share with as many people as we can.”

Österplan says that another reason for Scania’s roadshow is to give an honest demonstration of what it’s like to drive an electric truck across Europe.

“In many countries we’ll have the support of a growing charging network, but we’ll also need to plan the routes smartly using Scania’s digital services and the Scania Charging Access service,” she says.

Roadshow will visit 13 countries

The roadshow’s first stop will be in Denmark. From there, the convoy winds its way through Norway, Italy, Spain, and several other countries in Western Europe. During October and November, the roadshow goes to Eastern Europe, before culminating in a grand finale in Sweden in December. In total, the roadshow will visit 13 countries – see full schedule here.

“We have a small core team of drivers and one event coordinator who will be on the road for the entire tour. Otherwise, it’s our colleagues in each market who are responsible for making sure the event attracts as many locally invited customers as possible,” says Österplan.

Aiming for best-suited rather than maximum battery capacity

The six variants of electric trucks are designed to showcase the wide range of transport applications that can already be electrified today. Scania’s convoy includes everything from an electric vehicle for urban distribution to a powerful tractor unit for heavy regional transport (see fact box below for full list).

Österplan explains that the variety of applications and battery capacities in the convoy makes it possible to have meaningful discussions with customers about achieving the best possible battery performance.

“Maximum battery capacity is not always the best choice; it’s about having the right capacity for the actual routes and operations. That’s why the roadshow carries the subtitle ‘An optimisation road show,’” she says.

Seeking stronger electrification support from policymakers

One of the final stops on the roadshow will be in Brussels, which gives Scania – as a vehicle manufacturer - the chance to show decision-makers and influential people that it has done its homework.

“Scania is doing everything we can to support the transport industry’s shift to electric, but we can’t do it alone. We need increased support from policymakers, including the EU Commission,” says Fredrik Allard, Senior Vice President and Head of E-mobility at Scania.
