Project to electrify Swedish timber transport now in full flow

29 OCTOBER 2026

The complete fleet of 12 battery-electric Scania trucks taking part in the TREE project are now operating at various forestry sites throughout Sweden.

TREE, the Swedish forestry sector initiative for the Transition to Efficient, Electrified Forestry Transport, is now in its final, full operational phase, with the news that all the Scania electric trucks committed to the project have been assigned.

A total of 12 battery-electric vehicles are transporting timber from seven different Swedish forestry sites to timber sawmills and terminals, ranging from Småland in the south of the country to Norrland in the far north. It is part of a far-reaching research and demonstration project led by Skogforsk, the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden with contributions from 22 other partners.

The Swedish forestry industry accounts for 20 percent of Sweden’s heavy road transport, and Skogforsk has set a target of having 50 percent of new forestry being electrified by 2030, which will bring a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

Scania is a key partner in this initiative. “We must work together and develop business models, logistics and technology. Scania contributes with our expertise, and of course our electric trucks,” explains Ulf Ceder, Senior Research Manager at Scania.

In northern Sweden, Eklund Åkeri operates a 70-tonne electric timber truck for Sveaskog, testing battery performance in winter temperatures as low as –30°C

There is a wide variety of different electric trucks taking part in the project, showcasing Scania’s ability to provide electric transport solutions that are adapted to each customer’s specific needs.

The electric dozen includes:

  • The world’s largest electric truck, a massive 94-tonne, 33-metre Scania woodchip hauler operating on behalf of Stora Enso, which is owned and managed by LBC Frakt Värmland. This vehicle is running shipments to Stora Enso’s Skoghall board mill.
  • Timber trucks with cranes: SCA and Rolf Lövgrens Åkeri have jointly commissioned a 74-tonne Scania electric timber truck equipped with a loading crane to cover routes in and around the forestry industry giant’s Östavall terminal.
  • Harsh climate, deep-forest, timber trucks: In northern Sweden, where winter temperatures can be as low as minus 30°C, a 70-tonne Scania electric timber truck is being operated by Eklunds Åkeri on behalf of Sveaskog, testing battery performance in the extreme cold.
  • Regional woodchip and log haulers: A 64-tonne Scania 45R woodchip truck with 624 kWh battery capacity has been deployed by Södra in the Småland area of southern Sweden. In addition, VSV Unite and Sveaskog have jointly commissioned other electric timber trucks to operate in the Närke and Värmland regions further north.
  • Other members of the electric fleet: The remainder of the nationwide 12-truck trial is made up of identical heavy-duty Scania battery-electric vehicles, which are being used in logistics networks by the likes of Dalafrakt and Alltransport.

TREE began in late 2023 and is due to conclude in November 2026. After that there will be a performance evaluation which will determine the next steps in terms of potential scalability of electrified transport for the forestry sector.
