Inalpi brings sustainable transport into supply chain

For Italian dairy company Inalpi, sustainability starts close to home – with local milk, traceability and a controlled supply chain. Through its logistics partner Tonoli, and Tonoli’s new electric Scania charged with renewable energy, transport is a part of that journey.

Inalpi’s production site in Moretta lies in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont, a region where food production, local roots and care for the surrounding landscape are closely connected. Here, Inalpi has built its business around quality, traceability, and a controlled supply chain based on 100 percent Piedmontese milk.

For a company where raw material, production and trust are central, sustainability does not stop at the factory gate. It includes how products are moved, stored and delivered. This is why Inalpi collaborates with Tonoli, a haulage company based nearby, with an electric Scania truck.

For transport buyers, such as Inalpi, the choice of logistics partner affects not only cost and service quality, but also the environmental performance and credibility of the full supply chain.

A partner with the same vision

Tonoli has been a logistics partner to Inalpi for many years. The company is based in Verzuolo, 15 kilometres from Inalpi’s production site, and manages flows of Inalpi products including milk powder and butter.

The collaboration is built around daily logistics. Tonoli moves goods from Inalpi’s production site in Moretta to its warehouses in Verzuolo, where products are stored, handled and prepared for onward distribution.

The scale is significant. Inalpi’s milk powder – one of the company’s core products – is moved in volumes of approximately 500 tonnes per day.

This makes logistics a crucial part of Inalpi’s daily operation. Reliability, timing, traceability and efficiency are all essential. “For Inalpi, it is important to choose logistics operators who share the same vision,” says Andrea Peris, Logistics Supply Manager at Inalpi. “In Tonoli, we found an extremely important partner that followed this sustainable approach and invested in electric trucks that make it possible to optimise loads and reduce emissions.”

Electric transport in daily operation

Tonoli’s electric Scania is used in regional shuttle operations between Inalpi’s production site and Tonoli’s warehouses. The route is short, repeated and operationally important – precisely the type of flow where electric transport can be integrated into the rhythm of daily logistics.

The vehicle is charged using renewable electricity produced and stored at Tonoli’s own premises. Tonoli has invested in photovoltaic systems on its roofs and battery storage, enabling the electric Scania to be charged with self-produced renewable energy.

For Inalpi, this means that a part of its logistics chain can move towards lower-emission transport without compromising the demands of a food supply chain.

“The electric trucks acquired by Tonoli make it possible to optimise several trips per day between our sites,” says Peris.

The investment was not driven by a direct demand from Inalpi. Tonoli took the step proactively, based on its own sustainability ambitions and the desire to be ready for future logistics needs. But for Inalpi, that initiative creates value.

“When suppliers and customers share the same values, it strengthens the entire chain,” says Davide Audisio, Inalpi’s Energy Manager. “For us, reducing emissions and environmental impact throughout the supply chain means looking from milk production at our farms all the way to the transport of the finished product.”

Scania’s role through Tonoli

Tonoli selected Scania as its electric truck partner, building on a long-standing relationship and supported by Scania’s ability to provide a vehicle and solution suited to the operator’s real transport needs.

“To concretely implement this sustainable process using electric vehicles, Tonoli chose a reliable operator such as Scania,” says Peris. “This makes it possible to combine efficiency and sustainability in transport vehicles.”

The case shows how the shift to electric transport depends on more than a single vehicle. It requires collaboration between the transport buyer, the transport operator and the technology provider. Inalpi sets expectations for a responsible supply chain. Tonoli runs the transport and invests in renewable energy and electric vehicles. Scania provides the electric truck technology that helps make the operation possible.

Together, they form a practical example of how production, logistics and energy can begin to move in the same direction.

Sustainability beyond production

Inalpi’s sustainability work extends across the company’s operations and sees circular economy as an important principle. Since 2021, Inalpi has measured its environmental impact through carbon and water footprint work, enabling the company to track continuous improvements.

This wider perspective is vital. For Inalpi, sustainable transport is not an isolated initiative. It is part of a broader effort to reduce environmental impact across the supply chain, from milk production to logistics and finished products.
