Scania batteries built to last for heavy transport

The battery cells going into Scania’s vehicle batteries are an ideal fit for the fast-developing energy and performance needs of electric heavy transport.

The growing demand for electric vehicles makes securing battery supply top priority, something that is reflected in Scania’s multiple sourcing strategy. And the latest battery cell technology going into the company’s electric vehicles offers new levels of performance and lifespan.

The beauty of the cells is that they are developed in-house by the company’s Research & Development team, specifically for the demands of heavy-duty transport, including lifespan, range, speed and power output.

“The cells fit hand-in-glove into Scania’s modules, which in turn fit into battery packs that we have optimised for different truck designs. In addition, the battery management system and battery climate control have a major impact on performance, and both are uniquely developed by Scania,” explains Viktor Regefalk, Product Manager at Scania e-Mobility.

Key features of Scania’s batteries

  • Proven battery chemistry: The batteries, which use Nickel Managanese Cobalt Oxide for its balance of energy density, power, and longevity.
  • Potential for greater power levels: The maximum charging power is up to 375 kW via the current CCS2 standard. But with the Megawatt Charging System even greater power levels will be possible.
  • Installed capacity: Battery capacity options comes in 240, 320, 400*, 480 or 560* kWh usable capacity. (*400 and 560 kWh options will be available for order during the beginning of 2026).
  • Charging time: The batteries are fully charged in 90 minutes at 375 kW (with 560 kWh usable capacity).
  • Complete service support: Scania’s service network covers all repair and maintenance needs of the new batteries.
  • Safety and fire resistance: The in-house battery system design ensures consistently high safety standards.

A positive and secure solution for Scania’s customers

Viktor Regefalk says Scania is confident that the company’s battery cell set-up delivers on two fronts: offering strong performance, long lifespan, and favourable Total Cost of Ownership for Scania customers, and securing a safe and resilient supply chain for the company in the highly competitive and rapidly growing electric vehicle market.

“We’re glad to present a solution that meets both our customers’ expectations and our own internal requirements,” he says. “We are confident that the properties with the batteries cell will be appreciated both by the driver and the owner of the vehicle.”
