Four effective solutions to accelerate transport electrification

20 FEBRUARY 2026

In The Netherlands, Scania is working with a group of ambitious transport companies, transport buyers and energy providers to find solutions that speed up electrification. Kristoffer Nyberg, Solutions Manager at Scania, explains more.

The question of how to scale up and quicken the pace of electrification is possibly the key issue facing today’s heavy transport industry. But in The Netherlands they’re not sitting around waiting for the answers to come.

An initiative called Accelerating Road Transport Electrification has brought together major players from across the country’s transport ecosystem: from shippers and hauliers to charging system operators, energy suppliers, logistics companies and public authorities.

These influential voices, led by Scania, AllChiefs, Hyve and the Smart Freight Centre, have worked to identify the biggest barriers to electrification. Late last year we held a workshop to then find real solutions to accelerate progress.

The result is a report that can act as roadmap to electrify quicker at a much larger scale for both The Netherlands and Europe as a whole.

Promising solutions: strategic routes and more

We’re already seeing some promising solutions that we want to pursue and start developing as soon as possible, including:

  • Strategic starting routes, where we begin with a few key lanes that make economic sense, with a view to ambitious expansion later on. By sharing the cost of investing in charging infrastructure and network development, strategic starting routes can create a strong basis for electrification, one that can grow organically as more interested parties join the effort.

  • A partnership playbook that explores how contracts between transport buyers and logistics companies can better support electrification; for example, through contractual terms that make it easier to invest in electric trucks and charging infrastructure while meeting shared sustainability targets.

  • Designing for total economy, meaning we need a system-wide approach to the economics of electric transport to make it truly sustainable at scale. For now, supportive public policies are key to strengthening the business case, such as favourable road tolls and taxation, greater gross vehicle weights and priority access for electric trucks to cities and logistics hubs. By building on these enablers and monetising the shared benefits for all partners, the overall economics could improve rapidly.

  • Connecting the dots within organisations, because too often, the person responsible for sustainability isn’t connected to the one who is managing logistics contracts. With better alignment between these roles, we could start to see tenders and procurement processes that are exclusively dedicated to battery-electric transport.

Join us to accelerate transport electrification

I hope some of these strong ideas will become reality by the time this initiative has its next meeting this year.

We already have around sixty companies on board from around the globe. These include major brands for whom sustainable transport is central to their sustainability journey, as well as key logistics and transport operators for whom electrification is the natural next step within existing operational boundaries. Energy and charging companies are also part of the initiative, helping to create the right conditions.

Together, these partners represent every part of the transport ecosystem – from food producers and consumer goods manufacturers to transport operators and energy companies. And we want to reach more transport industry stakeholders.

Join us to accelerate electric transport.
