SDG 14 – Life below water

Expansion of transport systems at sea can degrade marine and costal environments and the CO2 emissions from land transport are contributors to acidification of the oceans. 

The oceans have helped mitigate the impact of climate change by absorbing one third of all CO2 realised by humans coming from the transport industry, for example. This has unfortunately led to acidification affecting the biogeochemical carbon balance and the life below water. Improved efficiency and low-carbon transport systems are needed and Scania’s customers do not have to wait to adapt their businesses to a sustainable transport system; the solutions are already here. Our approach rests on the three pillars of Energy efficiency, Renewable fuels and electrification and Smart and safe transport, where we offer a broad range of platforms and services, to support our customers’ businesses today and tomorrow.

 

Deep sea-bed mining for minerals causes significant environmental damage, resulting in the destruction of ecosystems and loss of unique biodiversity. In 2021, Scania signed a global moratorium on deep sea-bed mining, committing to: before any potential deep seabed mining occurs, it needs to be clearly demonstrated that such activities can be managed in a way that ensures protection of the marine environment.
