SDG 11 – Sustainable cities and communities

Well-planned and well-designed transport systems link regions and people together and ensure access to services and goods. Accessible and affordable public transport and logistics boost development and opportunities.

Improving urban mobility is a highly complex challenge, particularly in the developing world. For any public transport solution to be truly sustainable, a range of closely linked environmental, social and economic factors must be considered. Keeping people moving is of course vital – but how do you do that while also reducing emissions and improving air quality? With so many stakeholders involved, how do you ensure that everyone stands to benefit from the new system? And can all this be achieved while also creating lasting value for the local economy? Through our holistic approach to urban transport, Scania offers solutions that can address all of these issues – as a new project in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire demonstrates (more details in the SDG 10 section)

 

The Danish capital, Copenhagen, has an ambitious plan to be carbon neutral already in 2025. With Scania electric refuse trucks introduced in 2021, the city is one step closer to its goal. For the residents in Copenhagen this means two things. Firstly, there will be less particle pollution in the air, as the electric engine is completely emission-free. Secondly, the noise from the refuse trucks will be significantly reduced when they are electric, because in the future you will only be able to hear the noise of the bins being emptied
