Bus and coach powertrains

Scania new bus and coach powertrain specifications

Explore the powertrain components in detail

Derived from Scania’s award-winning SUPER truck powertrain, the new bus and coach powertrain has been re-engineered to deliver enhanced performance, improved fuel efficiency and extended service life in people transport applications. With options for both combustion and plug-in hybrid configurations, it offers a flexible foundation for modern operations.

Both our new 11-litre and 13-litre engine uses a lot of components from Scania's award-winning SUPER powertrain for trucks, but has been adapted specifically for buses and coaches. With great torque at low revs, it offers improved driveability. And thanks to its many engineering strides, we can not only deliver representative fuel savings of 8% for the 13-litre engine and 10% for the 11-litre engine combined with the new gearbox, but we have also made it easier to service – and drastically improved its lifespan up to as much as 2,000,000 km.

  • Significantly improved fuel efficiency
  • Increased low rev torque
  • Improved serviceability
  • Increased lifespan – up to 2,000,000 km.
  • Renewable fuel capabilities

The G25CM is both lighter and shorter due to its precise engineering. With the additional space, a wider gear range provides even better starting, while also allowing lower revs at cruising speed. Gear shifts are also quicker and more responsive – which leads to both more energy efficient driving, and increased passenger comfort.

  • Better fuel efficiency
  • Quicker gear shifts
  • Better low RPM torque
  • Lowered engine RPM at cruising speed

For our 11-litre powertrains, the ZF EcoLife 2 gearbox is a great alternative especially suited for urban operations with frequent stops.

The dual 145 kW electric machines provide massive torque from standstill and add impressive responsiveness even at highway speeds. The e-machines are integrated with a new 6-speed gearbox, and add features such as regenerative braking. The result is outstanding driveability, premium ride comfort and improved fuel efficiency by as much as 40% in typical mixed coach traffic.

With the use of the Scania Zone service, the ability to operate with zero noise and emissions for up to 80 km can also be automated – switching to completely emissions free electric operation when entering geo-fenced zones that can be set up and managed digitally.

  • Perfectly matched for our new 13-litre engine
  • Additional power, torque and performance
  • Even further reduced emissions
  • Allows zero emission and low noise operation, with improved passenger comfort

We are introducing two new rear axle options: The R716 engineered to target lower noise and reduced fuel consumption, and the R756 for heavier traffic while benefitting from the same reduced fuel consumption. And alongside the axles, new tag axles have also been developed to perfectly match: The A461 (non-steered) and the AM461 (steered).

  • Lowered fuel consumption for reduced operational cost
  • Extended lifetime for improved uptime
  • Faster ratios and lower noise level for improved passenger comfort

Our updated brake systems allow for both better driveability, increased traffic safety and passenger comfort. Our multi step system allows for combinations to fit any topography. The upgraded and improved version of our previous electronic brake system is now also complemented with both a new exhaust brake, a new compression release brake (CRB) option, and our brand new 4700 D retarder.

  • Options for any topography or average operational speed
  • CRB can in many situations fully replace a retarder (350 kW braking power)
  • Combination of exhaust brake and retarder:  500 kW braking power
  • Self-regulating and switchable between performance and comfort modes

The rear module for the high floor K-chassis has been updated to perfectly fit all the components of the brand new powertrain – the new engine and gearbox, the radiator as well as the aftertreatment system. And when it comes to the rear overhang options, there are five variations – all fitting the same dimensions as before.
