Seeing is believing: Scania electric trucks pass extreme winter weather test with flying colours

6 FEBRUARY 2026

If you still think battery-electric vehicles can’t deal with the cold, read on, and then watch the film from our annual winter tests in Norway.

There’s a myth doing the rounds that electric trucks are unable to deal with winter weather. Some people say the batteries can’t cope with the freezing temperatures, that the trucks won’t start and that the battery charging takes much longer.

But at Scania, we always say seeing is believing. And if you’d been at our annual winter testing at Trysil in the Norwegian mountains these past few weeks, you’d have seen with your own eyes just how wrong the negative voices are.

Minus 25 Celsius. Snow everywhere. Seriously chilly conditions. The sort of challenging weather haulage drivers in certain parts of the world have to deal with on a regular basis to deliver people’s goods safely and on time.

Easy battery charging, excellent driving - despite the big freeze

Yet the biting cold was no bother at all for the range of Scania electric trucks we had there for customers to see and test, including a distribution vehicle, various tractor units and a waste collection truck.

“The conditions were really harsh but the electric trucks performed excellently,” says Daniel Schulze, Scania’s Head of Long Haul solutions markets, Europe North & East and Americas.

“Even when they were starting in minus 25oC, they were charging as fast as they would do in summer conditions.”

We previously reported from last year’s winter testing on the e-Mobility hub last year that UK transport journalists were wowed by how well Scania’s electric trucks performed in the Scandinavian chill. It was fantastic to see Scania customers have had the same positive impression at the 2026 edition.

“With a very low centre of gravity due to the batteries, the customers reported the trucks drove like racing trucks!” says Daniel. “So we are very happy with the performance, and the customers are happy. Try it!”

Don’t listen to those who guess and don’t test. As Daniel says, find out for yourself.

Because when it comes to Scania electric trucks, seeing truly is believing.
