From roadshows to megawatt charging: the biggest e-Mobility steps of 2025

17 DECEMBER 2025

As 2025 comes to an end, it’s a good moment to pause, recharge, and reflect on what happened in the world of electric transport – and what lies ahead of us.

Over the past 12 months, Scania has carried on with our mission of doing everything we can to support the transport industry’s shift to electrification. We continue to engage with everyone possible in the transport ecosystem to keep things moving, meeting and working with manufacturers, operators, transport buyers, energy providers and policymakers, including the EU Commission.

We still have much to do, but it’s clear that the transport industry made significant strides forward this year. Here are some of 2025’s most important milestones:

  • Interest from hauliers continued to rise, something clearly visible during Scania’s e-mobility roadshow between August and December, when a convoy of six battery-electric trucks visited 13 stops across Europe and covered more than 20,000 kilometres. More than 1,000 customers had the chance to explore everything from urban distribution vehicles to a powerful tractor unit for heavy regional transport.

The lasting impression among visitors was clear: after experiencing the vehicles first-hand many placed orders, convinced by the trucks’ power, driveability and overall maturity. The old saying “seeing is believing” proved true once again, as real-world demonstrations gave customers an actual sense of the capability and reliability they can expect in daily operations.
  • New ‘green’ public tenders appeared, with cities and local authorities explicitly demanding zero-emission solutions. The companies who rise to this challenge are the ones who will profit most in the future transport ecosystem. A clear example is the French waste collection company Sepur, which is expanding its electric refuse collection fleet with 41 new Scania trucks, supported by tailor-made depot charging from Erinion. It’s a solid sign of how sustainability requirements in public procurement are accelerating electrification in everyday municipal operations.

  • More than a 50 percent increase in battery-electric vehicles, which is very encouraging, even if we would like the growth to be even faster. In 2025, the number of connected Scania electric vehicles in operation grew from 959 at the end of 2024 to 1,461 in November 2025.

  • Transporters taking charge of infrastructure, with Norwegian grocery wholesaler ASKO opening the country’s first Megawatt Charging System (MCS) site at its depot, with two MCS points and four high-power CCS2 chargers. ASKO, which already covers its energy needs with its own solar and wind power, also became the first customer in the world to put a Scania truck with both MCS and CCS2 capability into actual operation.

  • Ever-expanding capabilities for battery-electric vehicles, with new applications showing the technology’s versatility. In northern Sweden, forestry company Sveaskog and haulage company Eklunds have put the country’s northernmost battery electric timber truck into operation as part of the TREE research project. The Scania R 400E battery-electric truck (400 kW continuous power and 624 kWh installed capacity) runs long distances in harsh winter conditions, far away from established charging infrastructure in a setting that truly tests the limits of battery-electric capability.

To make the operation possible, the team uses a Mobile Energy Storage System (MESS), a mobile biodiesel-powered charging unit that provides support charging between long stretches. It is a practical fossil-free solution that enables possible electric timber transport in one of Europe’s most demanding environments.

Despite the progress made this year, the road ahead is far from simple. The transition to electric transport still faces major challenges – from infrastructure and energy supply to policy frameworks and operational readiness. But at Scania, our commitment remains unwavering. We will continue to push boundaries, collaborate across the ecosystem, and lead the development of sustainable, electrified transport solutions.

Together, we can turn today’s momentum into tomorrow’s reality.
