What you need to know about the new London ULEZ
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE NEW LONDON ULEZ
KEY POINTS ABOUT THE NEW LONDON ULEZ
● ULEZ starts on April 08, 2019
● The ULEZ operates 24/7 365 days a year
● Daily charge for non-compliant vehicles is £100
● New wider LEZ emission standards from October 26, 2020
Drivers of trucks, buses and coaches need to be aware of a new cost to enter central London. Starting in April, 2019, there will be a new Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). The London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has introduced the ULEZ to improve the capital’s air quality. It replaces the current T-Charge.
What are the ULEZ emissions standards?
The ULEZ is in addition to the current Low Emission Zone (LEZ). It will operate 365 days a year. However, the emissions standards to enter the ULEZ are different to the current T-Charge and LEZ.
To enter the new ULEZ area, heavy goods vehicles must be Euro VI compliant. The daily charge if your vehicle does not meet the Euro VI standard is £100. This is in addition to any costs associated with the Congestion Zone and LEZ.
From October 26, 2020, the wider LEZ will change its compliance standards to Euro VI. Vehicles that fail to meet the new emissions standard will be required to pay £100 to enter the zone; £300 if the HGV does not meet Euro IV standard.
What do I need to do next?
If your vehicle is Euro VI compliant then you need do nothing. Or if you are not sure, you can check using TfL’s vehicle checker. If your vehicle is not compliant you can download the TfL app, register for Auto Pay, pay online or call TfL. Failure to pay will result in a penalty charge of £1000 (reduced to £500 if paid within 14 days).
