Scania offers a flying start for sustainable airports

In an era when the travel industry is putting a sharper focus on sustainability, Scania will be at inter airport Europe in Munich with a selection of vehicles, engines and solutions that bring sustainable technology to ramps and runways. Airport operators can turn to solutions based on alternative fuels and hybrids from Scania’s modular range in order to reduce their carbon footprint.

“Catering trucks and crash tenders may have low annual mileage, but they can still make vital contributions towards making airports more sustainable through using alternative fuels,” says Alexander Vlaskamp, Senior Vice President, Head of Scania Trucks. “Every contri¬bution is important and we see a rapidly growing awareness in this area from our customers when configu¬rating their new solutions.”


Scania is also offering industrial engines that fulfil the latest Stage V emission requirements, while also providing excellent fuel efficiency. The latest addition, DC16 315, is a V8 that produces 710 hp and meets both Euro 6 and Stage 5 emission standards. All of Scania’s industrial engines are based on Scania’s industry-leading truck engines, thus offering the same level of robustness and availability, as well as the opportunity to use Scania’s worldwide parts and service network.


Major airports depend on an array of different service and support vehicles in their operations. That is why Scania solutions based on alternatives such as bio¬ethanol, biogas, biodiesel or hybrids will make a difference, despite the fact that each individual vehicle may have relatively low annual mileage or operating hours.


“Closed area operations such as major airports are actually ideal for electrification through our hybrids,” says Vlaskamp.


“For instance, catering trucks go back and forth but travel quite limited distances and can find time for charging between missions. And if they run out of electric power, they can always rely on HVO for their internal combustion engine and still operate with a CO2 reduction of up to 90%.”


Scania is the only OEM that offers trucks, buses, chassis and engines that in¬clude a full range of alternative solutions for propulsion and powering. This means that everything from rescue vehicles, passenger transport, catering and supply trucks or various types of maintenance vehicles, including snow blowers, can operate with a reduced carbon footprint and also excellent total operating economy.
