People sustainability

People Sustainability is about putting people and society at the centre of everything we do. People and society depend on transport. Sustainable transport is about meeting the needs of people and society throughout the ecosystem of transport.

Commited to adress the social impacts

A sustainable transport system keeps goods and people moving efficiently, without jeopardising human health, safety, or the environment, and that is available to all.

We believe that the shift to sustainable transport must be just and equitable – a transition in which no one is left behind, and everyone stands to benefit. Part of this is about making sure that we do not solve one sustainability challenge only to create new problems elsewhere. For example, while moving to electrified transport is key to achieving a fossil-free transport system, it is not a truly sustainable solution unless we also address its social impacts, including the human rights challenges linked to the mining of raw materials needed to make batteries.

Our people

Sustainability work starts with our own employees. In 2020 we implemented the Scania People Perspective, containing minimum standards for all employees globally. We also, in close dialogue with our union colleagues, defined a roadmap including milestones aiming at further improving the work-life for our employees globally.

We believe that the key to being a successful and sustainable company as well as making the transition just in the shift towards a sustainable transport system is social dialogue, and our engagement with the multi-stakeholder partnership Global Deal reflects this belief.

Suppliers

Scania has an impact on a large number of people through our supply chain. We also recognise that some of our most salient human rights risks are found in our raw material supply chains. Within the Volkswagen Group, we have developed  a group-wide approach to assess and mitigate human rights risks within our supply chain. This includes human rights risks related to sourcing raw materials.

Transparency and cooperation are key for promoting positive change throughout our supply chain and we expect our business partners to take responsibility together with us.

Customers and transport users

Sustainable transport solutions improve life for users and contributes to social development. We are helping our customers address challenges, such as cities and suburbs suffering from the effects of badly-planned transportation systems: air and noise pollution, congestion, road safety and unequal access to transport. We also engage in dialogue with stakeholders to ensure that the transport system evolves in a way that is socially sustainable. One example is our work on fair transport in our logistics network where we work in partnerships to improve working conditions for drivers.

Communities

Scania strives to ensure our business has a positive impact in communities around the world where we do business. We operate in countries where protection of human rights is weak, and we understand this requires more of our ability to manage human rights impact through our tools and processes. Wherever we operate in the world, Scania’s and our employees are passionate about making a contribution to society, and we support a number of initiatives in which our employees take part. A sustainable transport system keeps goods and people moving efficiently, without jeopardising human health, safety, or the environment, and that is available to all.

Human rights management

Respect for human rights is at the core of our approach to people sustainability. Find out what we’re doing to ensure human rights are upheld throughout our business.
