In winter, there are many factors that can prevent a truck from leaving the yard, related to weather conditions, mechanical problems and operational safety concerns, here are just a few of the most common.
Cold temperatures can reduce a battery’s capacity to hold a charge, making it difficult to provide the necessary power to start the engine.

The starter motor may struggle to turn the engine due to extra strain from cold starts and increased power demands.
Starter motor fitted from £559.00*.
Moisture in brake lines can freeze, causing inactive brakes. Air brakes are especially vulnerable, but regularly changing the air dryer filter can help prevent this.

Keep delivering to your customers with our Connected Services
Delivering goods on time during winter can be challenging due to adverse weather conditions, increased traffic, and potential maintenance issues. However, with careful planning and preparation, you can minimise delays and keep deliveries on track. Here is how we can help.
Before you set off
View live traffic information, analyse driving routes for roadworks, accidents and any height, weight and width restrictions and pre plan driving routes including any rest stops.
Communication and coordination
Set up Geofencing so you receive notifications when deliveries are made or when a vehicle is approaching a customer site.
Fuel management
View fuel and reductant levels in real-time (1 minute updates) for vehicles with a factory fitted fuel-theft alarm, receive SMS or email notifications when a tampering event is detected.
Load management
View axle weights and spot any loading issues or if a trailer is empty.
All of these features are available through our Fleet Position module on MyScania.
Improving driving skills in winter conditions is absolutely crucial for truck drivers to ensure not only their own safety but also the safety of everyone on the road. Winter driving presents unique challenges, and adopting the right strategies can make all the difference.
Be cautious with braking
When roads are slick, be mindful of how you brake. Over-reliance on the retarder can cause wheel lockup on icy surfaces, so use it carefully. Instead, use gentle engine braking or light applications of your service brakes. If your wheels begin to skid, ease off and regain control.
Idle wisely during cold starts
Idling in winter keeps the engine warm and prevents fuel gelling, but excessive idling wastes fuel and causes engine wear. Idle briefly for cold starts, then drive slowly to complete the warm-up efficiently.
Reducing speed isn’t just a suggestion – it’s a necessity
Slower speeds give you more time to react. Excessive acceleration can cause wheels to lose traction and skid. Coasting allows the truck to maintain momentum without adding power that could lead to a loss of grip.
Being prepared, planning and fixing any potential issues when you have the opportunity saves time and cost tomorrow. Which is why we have your back.
