Scania employees go the extra 60 miles for Cancer Research UK
October 2021
Employees from throughout Scania (Great Britain) Limited's nationwide support centre and service network have taken part in a 60 Mile Challenge during the month of September in aid of Cancer Research UK, raising more than £2,700 in the process.
Scania's participation in the challenge was supported by Scania Community, the company's fundraising and volunteering engagement programme, with Cancer Research UK being the Scania GB’s official national charity partner.
The 60 Mile Challenge invited employees to play their part in beating cancer by obtaining sponsorship to cover 60 miles on foot at an average rate of two miles a day for every day during September. Employees who took part were asked to log their daily miles on the company’s employee app, Scania World, and share images of their daily walks to reflect how they were getting on.
Commenting on the event, Angie Lawrence-Scott, Scania (Great Britain) Limited's Head of Corporate Communications, says, "We are a new corporate partner of Cancer Research UK, so this was a great first activity for our employees to take part in. I personally participated in this challenge and found it to be a very motivational experience, encouraging me to walk or run each day to raise money and helping me to get fitter at the same time! Most of us know someone affected by cancer and this drives you to want to support this charity and help them to find a cure. I am delighted that we have raised more than £2,700 – and this is just the start, we hope to raise lots more as we continue our partnership and invite our employees to get involved in regular fundraising activities."
Gemma Kitching, Relationship Manager, Cancer Research UK adds, "Thank you to all employees at Scania (Great Britain) Limited for your support in raising vital funds for Cancer Research UK. Well done to everyone who participated in this challenge."
Scania and Cancer Research UK
Scania GB’s association with Cancer Research UK forms part of Scania Community, the company's community engagement programme. As a core pillar of Scania Community, the company is encouraging its 1,500+ UK employees to participate in charitable fundraising and volunteering activities. In addition to organising fundraising activities for its chosen charity partners, Scania GB will donate 7.5 hours of each employee's time to a charity of their choice – employees may give this time to a charity of their choice or to Scania’s official charity partner. The selection of Cancer Research UK as Scania's national charity partner was made by an all-employee vote where employees were given a number of charities to choose from in two categories – Society and Environment – two key pillars within Scania's ‘Driving the Shift’ sustainability strategy.
