Our new bus and coach powertrain
Next stop: Sustainability
With our new bus and coach powertrain platform, we have just enabled a huge leap in sustainability and profitability in people transport. The powertrain platform is built on components and engineering from Scania’s award-winning SUPER powertrain for trucks – but adapted for buses and coaches, and with the option for a plug-in hybrid configuration. Altogether, this results in cost-efficient sustainable solutions for a wide variety of needs in travel operations.
One platform - two distinct performance steps
Meet the new combustion platform
Fuel efficiency, streamlined maintenance and long service life are all key for profitable operations with minimised emissions. With a 13-litre engine improved in almost every way, a new gearbox, new brake system options and axle choices – several key operational aspects have been made better.
A great choice to lower cost and emissions in demanding intercity and long-distance operations.
Meet the new plug-in hybrid (PHEV)
Sustainability and performance are far from opposites. All the range of a conventional powertrain, but with further improved fuel efficiency, power and torque. And with the ability to run in fully electric mode, ensuring low emission zone compliance and improving both comfort and driveability.
An excellent solution for highly efficient long-distance travelling with low emission zone compliance and premium comfort.

A powertrain platform based on the Scania SUPER
– with electric capabilities
Our new powertrain is not just super efficient in general – but is actually based on the same components as the SUPER truck powertrain that have proven to be both successful and incredibly efficient – with up to 8% improved fuel efficiency from the combustion engine and gearbox combined.

Our new 13-litre engine uses a lot of components from Scania's award-winning SUPER powertrain for trucks, but has been adapted specifically for buses and coaches. With great torque at low revs, it offers improved driveability. And thanks to its many engineering strides, we can not only deliver fuel savings of up to 8% combined with the new gearbox, but we have also made it easier to service – and drastically improved its lifespan up to as much as 2,000,000 km.
- Significantly improved fuel efficiency
- Increased low rev torque
- Improved serviceability
- Increased lifespan – up to 2,000,000 km.
- Renewable fuel capabilities
The G25CM is both lighter and shorter due to its precise engineering. With the additional space, a wider gear range provides even better starting, while also allowing lower revs at cruising speed. Gear shifts are also quicker and more responsive – which leads to both more energy efficient driving, and increased passenger comfort.
- Better fuel efficiency
- Quicker gear shifts
- Better low RPM torque
- Lowered engine RPM at cruising speed
The dual 145 kW electric machines provide massive torque from standstill and add impressive responsiveness even at highway speeds. The e-machines are integrated with a new 6-speed gearbox, and add features such as regenerative braking. The result is outstanding driveability, premium ride comfort and improved fuel efficiency by as much as 40% in in typical mixed coach traffic.
With the use of the Scania Zone service, the ability to operate with zero noise and emissions for up to 80km can also be automated – switching to completely emissions free electric operation when entering geo-fenced zones that can be set up and managed digitally.
- Perfectly matched for our new 13-litre engine
- Additional power, torque and performance
- Even further reduced emissions
- Allows zero emission and low noise operation, with improved passenger comfort
We are introducing two new rear axle options: The R716 engineered to target lower noise and reduced fuel consumption, and the R756 for heavier traffic while benefitting from the same reduced fuel consumption. And alongside the axles, new tag axles have also been developed to perfectly match: The A461 (non-steered) and the AM461 (steered).
- Lowered fuel consumption for reduced operational cost
- Extended lifetime for improved uptime
- Faster ratios and lower noise level for improved passenger comfort
Our updated brake systems allow for both better driveability, increased traffic safety and passenger comfort. Our multi step system allows for combinations to fit any topography. The upgraded and improved version of our previous electronic brake system is now also complemented with both a new exhaust brake, a new compression release brake (CRB) option, and our brand new 4700 D retarder.
- Options for any topography or average operational speed
- CRB can in many situations fully replace a retarder (350 kW braking power)
- Combination of exhaust brake and retarder: 500 kW braking power
- Self-regulating and switchable between performance and comfort modes
The rear module for the high floor K-chassis has been updated to perfectly fit all the components of the brand new powertrain – the new engine and gearbox, the radiator as well as the aftertreatment system. And when it comes to the rear overhang options, there are four variations – all fitting the same dimensions as before.
Rear overhang chassis variations:
3080 mm 4x2 | 3280 mm 4x2 | 4385 mm 6x2*4 | 4780 mm 6x2*4 |
Technical specifications tailored for specific needs
With variations and options available for everything from the chassis layout, the engine performance level, axles, brake systems and both conventional combustion engine operation and plug-in hybrid operation – Scania's reinvented powertrain platform is a blank canvas for an excellent bus or coach regardless of the needs or prerequisites.
