SCANIA MALAYSIA’S FUTURE SUSTAINABILITY LEADERS FUND SUPPORTS SJKC CHEONG HUA’S ‘MANGROVE TREE PLANTING’ PROGRAMME

SABAK BERNAM, SELANGOR – Scania Malaysia’s Future Sustainability Leaders Fund proudly supported Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Cheong Hua’s ‘Mangrove Tree Planting’ programme, an initiative aimed at fostering environmental awareness among young learners while contributing to the restoration of Malaysia’s vital mangrove ecosystems.

Held in conjunction with World Mangrove Day, the programme was supported by Pertubuhan Sahabat Hutan Bakau Kampung Dato' Hormat (SHBKDH), Persatuan Benih Hijau, and three participating schools: SJKC Phooi Min, SJKC Sin Min, and Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan (SMJK) Yoke Kuan. The event brought together students, parents, teachers, volunteers from the two community-based environmental organisations, and employees from Scania Malaysia for a meaningful day of environmental learning and conservation activities.

“Environmental education is most effective when students can see, touch, and experience nature for themselves. Through this programme, our students not only learned about the importance of mangrove forests but also contributed directly to their conservation. We hope the experience inspires them to become lifelong champions of sustainability and environmental responsibility,” said Tan Siok Lee, Teacher of SJKC Cheong Hua.  

Organised by the Board of Management of SJKC Cheong Hua the programme brought together approximately 160 participants, including 96 students for a hands-on learning experience focused on mangrove conservation and planting. As part of the day’s activities, students learned about different mangrove species, participated in tree-planting activities, engaged in post-planting discussions, and completed mangrove-themed craft activities that reinforce key environmental lessons.

“Mangrove forests play a vital role in safeguarding coastlines and riverbanks from erosion, supporting biodiversity, and enhancing climate resilience. The Mangrove Tree Planting programme aims to support four United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in terms of Quality Education (SDG 4), Climate Action (SDG 13), Life Below Water (SDG 14), and Life on Land (SDG 15). These goals also align closely with Scania’s broader commitment in driving the shift towards a sustainable transport system while creating lasting and environmental value for present and future generations,” said Zarif Khairil, Data & Digital Officer who was one of the participants from Scania Southeast Asia (SSEA).

“The Future Sustainability Leaders Fund was established to inspire and support young people in taking meaningful action towards a more sustainable future. Programmes like this allow them to better understand their role in protecting the environment and demonstrate how individual actions can contribute to a more sustainable future for their communities and the planet,” said another participant from SSEA, Emill Zulkipli, Learning Development Specialist.

The Future Sustainability Leaders Fund continues to support schools in Malaysia in starting-up curricular activities, extra-curricular activities or projects focusing on sustainability. Through these initiatives, the fund helps nurture the next generation of sustainability leaders by encouraging environmental awareness, active student participation, and experiential learning.
