BAIDURI DIMENSI – ONE OF THE LARGEST ONE-STOP LOGISTIC PROVIDER IN WESTPORT TO REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT WITH SCANIA ECOLUTION
Preamble
The founder, Dato’ Sri Moithu Kutti bin Mohammad @ Musa Mohammad, had a very challenging but progressive 10 years that was instrumental to the establishment of Baiduri Dimensi Sdn Bhd in 1997. Dato’ Sri went to work immediately after finishing his form five education but with his flair for business and hard-earned experience, he set-up Baiduri Dimensi on his own accord. Making mistakes and correcting them along the way was instrumental in structuring his learning process in managing a logistics company as he had his hands full operating at Johor port, Tanjong Langsat Jetty, Westport and Northport.
Though his hands-on skills and expertise are good, he felt he needed to have an academic qualification. Upon getting approval for entry as a matured student with extensive working experience in logistics, he was accepted in the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transportation (CMILT-UK) course as a member after passing all 13 modules that took him four years to complete.
Dato’ Sri’s strength lies in his people skills giving him the upper hand in managing his personnel to work together towards a common goal, thus making it easier to achieve his company’s objectives.
Services rendered
Dato Sri’ works with a loyal group of several levels of skilled workers handling the loading and unloading of bulk cargo from ships to warehouses and vice versa. His built-in management skills resulted in fast turn-around time for ships and good utilization of berth at all four ports. Baiduri Dimensi has set the berth productivity as their core objective to fulfill its customers, shipping lines and the port’s needs till this day.
He decided to set-up Baiduri Dimensi focusing in haulage services as he wanted to capture this market and after trying out several truck brands, he discovered that Scania was the brandname to own to be successful. In 2005, he started a small fleet of Scania prime movers and 2011 marked a milestone in Baiduri Dimensi’s history when he initiated the Forwarding and Shipping Division. He is now in the big leagues fulfilling the demands from customers that sought after a total logistics provider.
Today, Dato’ Sri Haji Moithu Kutti bin Mohammad @ Musa Mohammad, has made it with Baiduri Dimensi, armed with 30 years of experience, he has managed to succeed in almost all areas of the logistics business. Baiduri Dimensi is one of the largest one-stop logistic provider in Westport. Apart from Haulage services with about 70 prime movers and 300 trailers split between Port Klang and Johor bases; other services include Cargo Handling Management, Port Operations – Fork lifts, Gears and Heavy Machine Equipment, Freight Forwarding – Swift and precise customs clearance services, Heavy Equipment MRO – Heavy equipment, truck and trailer repair, and Warehousing – receive and securely store and manage inventories.
Dato’ Sri is assisted by Roslan Effendi, Director of Corporate Planning with extensive experience of leading business operations across Asia Pacific; Roy Eu Hock Cheng, Director of Human Resource & Admin who is well experienced in port handling, warehouse management, transportations, consultancy services and managing containers depot; and Faizal Abd. Rahaman, Director of Operations for Johor branch with 15 years of experience as a logistician. These 3 directors are the backbone of Baiduri Dimensi’s business.
Warehousing – essential storage needs for Customers.
The need to upgrade his business, pushed Dato’ Sri to look at other opportunities and offering storage was next in line. He presently has 6 warehouses running with a total space capacity of more than 700,000 square feet with 7 more units to be built and strategically located in PKFZ, Westport and Perigi Nenas in Pulau Indah and Northport, Port Klang. He is looking at a total square footage space of 1.2-1.3 million by end of 2021.
All these warehouses provide a full range of warehousing services and value-added activities for various customers with various commodities such as ferrous & non-ferrous metals, bulk commodities, agricultural products and also bulk commodities such as zircon sand and fertilizer. In 2014, his 400,000 square feet storage facility in PKFZ became the licensed warehouse to store London Metal Exchange (LME) metals. These are non-ferrous metals such as nickel, copper, zinc, lead, aluminum alloy and tin.
The high standards requirement in the Haulage Division
To keep operation productivity high with low fuel expenditure, Baiduri Dimensi constantly strives to improve on its prime mover fleet. Fading away the older trucks with 21 new Scania P410 and G410, Dato’ Sri maintained the trucks and drivers’ performances and the services rendered to all his customers. The fact that Scania trucks are designed for better fuel consumption with their excellent powertrain and aerodynamic design, helps with the total operating costs. Dato’ Sri also prefers the Scania trucks than any of the other brands that he initially bought in the early days, so much so that his fleet of 70 trucks almost all carry the Scania brandname. “I can safely say that I am a hardcore Scania truck lover because of the reliability and the all-round enhanced and powerful performance of the truck. The Scania Prime Mover is more user-friendly, extremely comfortable and most importantly the clear visibility from all angles gives my drivers that safety feeling when on the job,” stated Dato’ Sri. “I can attest to this fact because in the early days, I too was one of Baiduri Dimensi’s drivers,” added Dato’ Sri.
Baiduri Dimensi’s last purchase was 10 units of the Scania G410 LA6x2MSZ in 2018 and presently, Dato’ Sri has signed up three Scania New Truck Generation that is also being supported by Scania Credit just like many of his Scania truck purchases before. Baiduri Dimensi has in the past worked on flexible terms with Scania Credit and he felt that working with them was more cost-effective and profitable.
The Fleet Management System Control 10 – The Scania Ecolution
Dato’ Sri believes that a truck is only as good as the after-sales services that comes with it. When he was introduced to the Scania Fleet management System (FMS) Control 10 package that came with the Repair & Maintenance contracts under Scania Ecolution partnership agreement, he realised that the FMS was a great way to coach his drivers’ performance and train his drivers to be at their best consistently.
“With FMS, I am able to keep track of the good drivers and reward them accordingly and let them set a good example for the rest,” said Dato’ Sri. “And the beautiful thing about FMS is that everything is recorded and in black and white leaving no space for disputes from all quarters,” added Dato’ Sri.
Since more than 25 years, Scania has provided the industry’s broadest range of products that run on alternatives to fossil fuels. In September 2019, Scania announced its aim to set Science Based Targets initiatives (SBTi) towards climate change. The approval of these targeted initiative now marks another major milestone on the journey towards fossil-free transport. Over the past several years, Scania has significantly reduced CO2 emissions from its own operations and from its own transport and logistics. Scania has also worked to minimise emissions from its products through fuel efficiency measures – one of the many being Scania Ecolution. Baiduri Dimensi is proud to be part of this initiative.
The Scania Ecolution has also given the drivers inspirational push to keep the costs of the Scania truck that is in their care down to a much lower level than before. As is, the fuel savings has gone up to 7-8 %.
Dato’ Sri has signed 6 of his Scania trucks on Ecolution and the remaining are being retrofitted with FMS to be Scania Ecolution-abled batch by batch as he believes by doing so he is solidifying his stance in sustainability for his fleet by reducing the Carbon Dioxide emission into the environment.
‘To err is human, to forgive divine’ is a saying that Dato’ Sri believes in. His drivers need to be trained by the Scania Drivers’ Trainer to perform in sync with the technological capabilities of the trucks and the Scania Ecolution way of working. With proper training his drivers will adopt a positive attitude and perform, and avoid harsh braking, idling and speeding and capitalized on the performance of the Scania trucks to get maximum uptime for increased profitability.
With approximately 30% of Baiduri Dimensi’s total operating cost goes to fuel consumption, it is definitely in Dato’ Sri’s interest to polish his drivers to be at their best all the time and he truly appreciate all the support that Scania has given him over the years. He is also quite satisfied with the level of commitment that Scania has shown him through its way of working giving him good returns on his fleet investment.
Taking care of the Extended Family
Though he is disciplined in his approach, Dato’ Sri is a very caring individual and really takes care of his staff whom he considers his extended family. He treats everyone equally, including his two elder sons and a daughter who works for him. He believes that as ‘chief of his tribe,’ it is his responsibility to take care of the welfare of his staff and their family.
As far as his own family is concerned he is very happy that he can one day, perhaps in 10 to 15 years from now, safely leave the running of Baiduri Dimensi Group’s business to three of his nine children who started from the bottom up and are beginning to emulate him in every aspect of the logistics business. He will give the same opportunity to his remaining 6 children when the time comes.
The future – the task at hand
Dato’ Sri is planning to purchase between four to eight Scania New Truck Generation annually within the next five years and strengthen his haulage division with the help of his drivers fulfilling their minimum 40,000 kilometres requirement monthly.
“In a lot of ways, the Scania trucks have contributed to a large part of my success as a Logistics provider. And now with Scania Ecolution I can reach my goals and achieve my long-term objectives in a much shorter time via the simple means of fuel efficiency for my haulage division,” exclaimed Dato’ Sri. “And a saving of 10% fuel for my Scania Fleet means better sustainability for my business through reduced costs of operation and lower emission of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere leaving the world a better place to live in for my children and our future generation,” concluded Dato’ Sri.
