Metropolitan areas all over the world are affected by the rise in transport need that comes with urbanisation. This presents challenges in terms of congestion as well as emissions and pollution that affect both people and the environment. Much can be gained by reducing the number of vehicles and instead commuting together, something that requires an attractive public transport system.
To further reduce emissions, the system has to consist of energy-efficient vehicles running on electricity or renewable fuels, depending on the operation and local conditions. Scania buses and services support the transition to a more sustainable transport system through their design, connectivity and compatibility with alternative fuels and electric operation as well as improved safety and reliability.
Minimising emissions in a metropolitan area is to a significant degree about vehicle technology and energy source. How the challenge is best tackled depends on several factors, such as legislation, infrastructure and capabilities, and route type. In many cities, specific routes have been electrified, whereas elsewhere, mitigation is instead handled through efficient low-emission buses running on renewable fuels.
Regardless of situation and the specific prerequisites, Scania´s wide powertrain portfolio and complete solutions empower authorities and operators on the journey towards sustainability by helping implement the technology most suitable for local conditions. And always with a responsible approach.
To achieve the most energy-efficient operations, it is necessary to consider the impact of both product technology and in-use factors. For electric buses, a low energy consumption impacts the operational range, while combustion-driven buses benefit from reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions. Scania addresses energy consumption from all angles.
Through energy-efficient, quality powertrains and buses specified for the operation, we ensure low energy consumption without compromising on factors such as performance and passenger capacity. Moreover, with our driver support functionalities and excellent maintenance services, vehicle usage can be optimised, further minimising consumption.
Road safety is of utmost importance in busy urban environments, where the conditions for bus drivers are often stressful. In order to prevent accidents, Scania buses are equipped with state-of-the-art safety systems such as zone management and ADAS, meeting or even exceeding regulations. These systems can ensure the vehicles follow speed limitations, assist the driver by increasing his or her awareness of the surroundings, and also help control the vehicle if and when needed.
Together with other safety features, they play a key role in mitigating risks and protecting drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users alike.
Operators in urban environments know the importance of keeping costs to a minimum. At Scania, customer profitability constitutes a foundation for the products and services we develop – always with the human perspective in mind.
A vehicle’s energy consumption depends on several factors. Powertrain performance is of course crucial, as is vehicle specification and product usage. Compared to its predecessor, the current generation of Scania buses reduces consumption and emissions by up to 21% - without compromising on performance.
Moreover, our driver support services typically contribute to savings of 10%, while our fleet management services enable analysis for further savings.
High vehicle utilisation is key to achieving cost-efficient operations. Our buses are built on proven technology and components, resulting in chassis and powertrains that are dependable, durable, and robust while still offering excellent drivability. They are designed to ensure protection of sensitive and expensive components, potentially minimising costly and time-consuming repairs. And our worldwide service network provides advanced repair and maintenance services, supported by outstanding spare parts availability.
In traffic planning, travel patterns and the number of passengers travelling in the system are two of many important factors. Reducing the fleet by even a single bus can have a big impact on operating cost, for example by lowering fuel and maintenance costs and the need for additional drivers.
With one of the best load capacity figures available, Scania chassis allow operators to keep these costs down for operators by enabling high passenger capacity.
Urban buses are constantly exposed to the risk of external damage and the work environment for drivers is very demanding. We have therefore developed a driver area that we believe is industry-leading. It offers exceptional drivability and state-of-the-art driver assistance systems that enable full vehicle control, thereby increasing safety and helping minimise incidents that cause unnecessary costs.
Also, safety features and excellent ergonomics benefit drivers and address the challenges operators face with sick leave and employee retention.
Our portfolio consists of a wide range of products with multiple options, allowing for customised configurations, and our extensive service package can be of equal importance. This enables us to offer suitable solutions catered to each operator’s individual challenges and needs.
Electrification is about more than the vehicles – it is everything from grid connections to charging units and management and financing the complete solution. Scania’s e-mobility solutions are designed according to specific needs, ensuring the right specifications, seamless integration and efficient performance.
We work closely with all stakeholders to understand requirements and use our expertise combined with cutting edge analytical tools to define a complete and optimal solution.
In urban areas around the world, unsatisfactory transport systems lead to economic, social and environmental problems. Bus systems offers a fast way to efficient public transport at a low investment cost, while at the same time being flexible and scalable in accordance to the changing needs of the city and its suburbs. Scania provides expertise in everything from planning to implementation as well as during operation.
