Full range of low-emission diesel engines
In-line with its policy, Scania is leading the transition to the Euro 3 emission standard, which is expected to apply from October next year for new models and one year later for all new vehicles. Six parallel output levels from 220/230 hp to 420 hp in Euro 2 or low-emission form are now available to customers. The close output steps enable every operator to find an optimal solution.
For distribution
For construction
For mainstream long-haulage
All new engines feature electronically controlled injection, enabling Opticruise to be specified at all output levels (from Feb 2000 for the outputs 260, 300, 380 hp).

Scania launched three of these engines at this year’s Brussels exhibition in January. They have since proven themselves with operators and in road tests in the press. In general, the results indicate that there is no significant fuel penalty for the lower emissions.
"Engine development is progressing well," comments Lars Orehall, Senior Vice President Powertrain at Scania. "We have managed to maintain a favourable balance between lower emissions and good fuel economy. You should keep the revs in the green band, but this is easy enough, since we have boosted low-speed torque on all new engines to promote driveability."
The solid green band on the tachometer extends from 1,200 to 1,500 r/min for the low-emission engines. The 9- and 11-litre engines pull well from around 1,100 r/min and the 12-litre from around 1,000 r/min.
The new engines have 5 ÖKO-points according to Austrian regulations, based on the proposed Euro 3 test cycle.
Emissions from the 9-litre engines can be further reduced by fitting a particulate trap, e.g. for inner-city operation. See separate release.
