Scania expands in Hungary
"In the longer term, Scania’s share of the Hungarian market will increase from about 15 percent today to approximately 25 percent. Last year was the best year ever for Scania in Hungary, and the first months of this year have begun promisingly in terms of both truck and bus sales."
So said Urban Erdtman, Senior Vice President and head of European sales at Scania at the opening of the company’s new importer and dealer premises in Budapest. The new premises are located beside the main route carrying the steadily expanding truck traffic between western and eastern Europe, and southwards towards the Balkans.
Hungary is a country which is expected to show an annual economic growth of 4-5 percent over the next few years.
According to Urban Erdtman, the Hungarian truck market is expected to expand by over 20 percent in the near future and the overall market for heavy trucks will have doubled a few years into the next century.
In 1997, heavy truck registrations in Hungary totalled 706. Scania’s share of these was about 15 percent.
Scania plans to further expand and reinforce its service network in Hungary in the future. In addition to the new Budapest premises, the company is currently represented by service outlets in the cities of Tiszaújváros in the northeast and Kaposvár in the southwest of the country.
The Hungarian venture is part of Scania’s aggressive market investment strategy in the growth markets of eastern and central Europe.
