Scania first with environmental certification in Latin America

Scania is the first automotive manufacturer in Latin America to be certified according to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. The aim is to have the entire Scania Group certified by the end of 1998.

Since 1995 Scania has been working on the environmental reviews which form the basis for implementation of an environmental management system. The operational units in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico are the first within the Scania Group to be certified. Intensive work is currently under way to certify Scania’s operations in Sweden and the rest of Europe. Once the environmental management system is implemented, each unit within Scania will have its own environmental programme with specific goals and the means of reaching them. Just as with the quality-related issues, responsibility for environmental related work has been delegated to the line managers.

"The environmental management system is a valuable complement to our other improvement processes," says Håkan Samuelsson, Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer at Scania. "The certification itself is no guarantee for reducing the environmental effects of our operations; rather, a guidance system of this sort helps us to systematise environmental issues and thus focus effort on taking the right actions at the right stages."

The concept of constant improvement is a guiding principle in Scania’s pro-environmental efforts. All Scania employees undergo training in the area of environmental awareness and improvement, in conjunction with the introduction of the environmental management system.

"Staff involvement is the very basis for successful environmental improvements. It is vital that we all have a uniform view on the significance of environmental issues for Scania and that we are in total agreement as to what the world around us requires today and in the future," says Håkan Samuelsson.
