Scania leading the way in timber transport

Fifty-five percent of the forest-haulage segment in 1996 makes Scania trucks the firm favourite of the Swedish forest industry. Scania's latest truck generation is more flexible than ever, offering unique possibilities of tailoring trucks to different needs all over the globe. Swedish forestry methods are the focus of attention, when Elmia Wood 97, the world's largest forestry exhibition, opens today in Jönköping, southern Sweden. Scania's forest trucks are well represented at the fair.

'Sustainable and profitable forestry production' is the theme of this year's exhibition, something that characterises the activities of the Swedish forest industry today. Technical progress in the transport industry has helped significantly reduce the environmental impact of the forest industry.

Sixty percent less fuel is needed to transport one tonne of cargo by Scania truck compared to 25 years ago. Simultaneously, harmful exhaust emissions have dropped dramatically - nitrogen oxides by 90 percent and particulates by 60 percent.

The Swedish forest industry is highly regarded internationally for its efficiency and environmental awareness. In many European countries, as well as in developing forest nations like China and South Africa, there is now a shift towards the Scandinavian type of truck-and-trailer combination, which is more efficient than most other solutions.

"A strong truck chassis is the basis of rational on-road forest haulage," says Senior Vice President Kaj Holmelius, responsible for chassis and cabs at Scania. "The Scania 4-series provides an excellent basis for the unique needs of different markets. With the aid of the components in Scania's modular specification system, trucks can be customised for any type of forest transport.

"Scania forest trucks are also renowned for their low operating costs, despite gruelling conditions. Excellent driver comfort and a high safety level are other factors that put Scania at the forefront of forest transportation worldwide."

Facts about forest transport in Sweden

In 1996, forestry transportation in Sweden almost reached the record level of 1995. An average of 96.1 percent of the forest trucks had consignments during 1996 (97.7 percent in 1995) and around 1,500 forest trucks are in professional use in Sweden.

The forest industry in Sweden accounts for 22 percent of all truck transportation, 32 percent of sea shipments and 33 percent of all freight by rail. Around 70 million tonnes of forest raw materials and forest products are shipped by truck, compared to 12 million tonnes by rail.

In general, almost 80 percent of the timber and 100 percent of wood chips are transported by truck, compared to less than half of the final products. The reason is naturally the unique flexibility of the truck in getting all the way to the timber piles in the forest.

According to statistics, a total of 334 forest trucks were registered in Sweden during 1996. Of these, 185 were Scanias, corresponding to a market share of 55.4 percent.
