New P and R day cabs

Scania unveils the new P and R day cabs in connection with the launch of the 4-series construction trucks. The new cabs are intended for operations which give top priority to high train weights, low overall height, minimum overall vehicle length and tight turning circles, and where no overnight facilities are needed. The new cabs offer more interior space than their counterparts in the 3-series since they are wider and longer. The new aerodynamic lines of the 4-series, with the upright windscreen and markedly rounded corner radii, provide a spacious interior environment, while at the same time reducing drag

Scania's new day cabs make their debut in the C-class. The P124 is fitted with the

CP14, the low day cab designed for the 4-series.

SafetyScania's new day cab meets the Swedish cab-safety norms: a 1-tonne impact

against one windscreen pillar from a height of 3 metres, a similar impact against

the rear cab wall and a static load of 15 tonnes on the roof. After all these tests,

the driver's space is to remain intact and the door shall remain closed

The cabs also meet the proposed European norms which specify that the area

around the occupants' feet shall resist deformation when a truck of a predefined

weight drives from behind into a platform at a specified speed

The cabs are made of galvanised steel around a sturdy steel cage

Integrated seat belts are standard on the driver's and passenger's seats

The cab floor is reinforced so that the seat mountings meet forthcoming safety

Seat belt warning - optional extra

Scania Alert: a device coupled to the radio which enhances driver attentiveness.

Optional equipment

Impact-absorbing deformable steering wheel

Flame-retardant and dirt-repellent upholstery

Large curved panoramic windscreen with a low bottom line to improve close-up

15% increased window area compared with previous models

Sturdy heated rear-view mirrors with aerodynamic shells

Electric mirror adjustment on the passenger side available as an option

Optional electrical headlight height adjustment

Multi-focal headlights with excellent beam throw

Optional auxiliary lights with factory-prepared mountings

Spotlights can also be mounted in the sun-visor above the windscreen (not

permitted on all markets) for excellent beam throw and less dirt accumulation

Cab exteriorAll the cabs in the 4-series have been designed in close cooperation with Italian

styling house Bertone

All the cabs feature air suspension with two or four springs

Very rounded corners and a convex roof profile reduce drag by between 4 and

12% compared with the 3-series, depending on bodywork, wind direction etc.

Two types of air deflector are available:

- short deflectors for truck with attached body

- long deflectors for tractor with semi-trailer

Air scoops integrated into the front corners create a powerful stream of air along

the side of the cab so that dirt and spray from the front wheels are kept away from

the door sides

Flush-fitting side windows contribute to the smooth flow of air along the door

The wedge shape of the cab and the rounded front corners contribute to a smaller

sweep radius and easier close-quarter manoeuvrability

The body can be fitted just 50 mm behind the cab's rear wall

The lower part of the grille can be folded down to act as a footstep when working

on the cab, for example when cleaning the windscreen

The C-class has sturdy steel bumpers with a generous approach angle

Heating and ventilationThe heating system's capacity, air throughflow and air distribution have been

improved compared to the 3-series

Double cabin filters (fine and coarse filter)

The heating and ventilation system is available in three variants:

- heating system with manual water valve

- electronic temperature control

- climate unit with electronic temperature control and air conditioning

The air conditioning system can be set to admit 10% or 100% fresh-air supply

The twin ventilation fans are installed outside the cab to lower the in-cab noise

Auxiliary heater as optional equipment

- airborne auxiliary heater to warm the cabin air

- waterborne extra heating to heat the engine and coolant, as well as the cab,

via the standard heating system (only on R-cabs)

- short-stop heater to warm the cab via the standard heating system, utilising the

residual heat in the engine block

Tinted single-glazed windows as standard

Side windows available with double-glazed tinted glass; lower noise level and far

less cold down-draughts along the door sides, particularly noticeable at

temperatures below -5

Comfort and ergonomicsCab suspension points spaced far apart for added stability

Broad, comfortable entry steps

Optional courtesy lights

The cab is wider and longer inside than previous day cabs, offering more

sideways space and more legroom (30-50 mm)

New driver's and passenger's seats in the following versions:

- luxury seat, air-suspension with multi-jointed backrest and a variety of

adjustment possibilities

- medium seat, air-suspension with electronic height control

- medium seat, air-suspension with mechanical height control

- medium seat without suspension

Seat heating is standard

Ventilated padding in the seat cushion and backrest

Low, modulated noise level: the engine is audible, but tiring noises have been

Wind rush noise has been reduced with the use of external sealing strips

New gear lever: short throw, with light, distinct action

New type of gear linkage with a sturdy gaiter attached to the cab floor for lower

noise penetration

New pedal box with suspended accelerator pedal

Modular dashboard follows the design principle of the 3-series

Cruise control operated via a control in the stalk to the left of the steering wheel

Optional adjustable steering wheel (20 angle, 60 mm height)

Column stalks move with the steering wheel when it is adjusted

Optional passenger seat armrest

Improved anti-theft protection with more secure steering column lock

The same key is used for the starter and door lock. This key is difficult to copy. If

the wrong key is used, the lock simply spins around and cannot be opened

Several alternatives for radio and communication equipment, 12 and 24V power

supply, at several points in the cab

Optional refrigerator for the centre console

Service and accessibilityScania After Sales Services engineers participated in the development of the 4-series from the beginning, in order to build optimum service accessibility into the design from the very outset.

One factor vital to accessibility is the design of the noise-suppression equipment. On the 4-series, the cab's lower section and the front of the chassis have been designed so that they effectively encapsulate the engine and thus function as noise barriers. Some of the noise barriers move out of the way when the cab is tilted, while others remain fixed to the frame without in any way impairing accessibility.

Mudguards and wheel housings are among the components which remain attached to the chassis when the cab is tilted. The obvious benefit is that the mechanic escapes drips of dirty water if the truck has been driven in the rain. The front mudguards are in two parts and can be lifted off for improved accessibility. Daily maintenance checks are conducted via a hatch in the front. The upper part of the grille opens. The cab corners are hinged and can be opened.
