INCREASING RELIABILITY IN REDUCING CO2 EMISSIONS

Transporting heavy loads across countless of kilometres and spending long hours on the road are the core of transporting and logistics businesses. Like many industries, the transport and logistics industry is no stranger to stiff competition as companies try their best to find the balance between providing the best solutions and services to customers while maintaining a profitable business. One company that has been successful at finding this balance while providing its customers with premium services is Gateway Shipping Sdn Bhd.

Gateway Shipping was established in 1995 with the aspiration to specialise in freight forwarding and customs brokage. The Kuantan based company provides end-to-end logistics solutions to its customers and has seen steady growth since its inception.

Gateway Shipping established its own haulage division in 2013 as the demand for transportation and haulage increased. The haulage division partnered with other parties and used leased trucks during the early years of operations. And today, Gateway Shipping has become a premium brand that provides its customers with premium services while making efforts to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by investing in the right products and services.

Gateway Shipping currently operates with 50 trucks in its fleet with half of it being Scania trucks as the trucks meet the company’s high requirements on safety and performance. High emphasis is also placed on proper maintenance of the vehicles since the trucks performance can also lead to reduction in operating cost.

"We provide end to end logistics solutions to our customers so it is crucial to have the reliable after sales support complementing the trucks. Despite our busy schedule, Scania trucks have always met our expectations in terms of performance and reliability providing Gateway Shipping with great uptime,” explained Managing Director of Gateway Shipping Sdn Bhd, Rishinsa Yusoff.

“Our trucks are traveling across the Peninsular Malaysia from Kuantan, Port Klang, Johor and Singapore. The fast and positive responses that we receive from Scania are very much appreciated. Having a partner that is available to respond to us from the different locations is very assuring for our business,” commented Rishinsa.

Gateway Shipping’s drivers are also evaluated by third party to ensure that they are driving efficiently and safely. The company stresses on the importance of having drivers that are passionate and share the same values. Its drivers are also rewarded for their excellent performances.

Rishinsa further added that Scania’s Fleet Management System (FMS) has been instrumental in lowering the company’s operating cost as the system allows his team to monitor his trucks performances as well as drivers' behaviour. Fuel consumption and all truck activities as well as performances are analysed and monitored on a weekly basis to further improve the company’s way of working and find further cost savings in the business.

“Our drivers undergo third party evaluations to ensure that they are driving efficiently and safely. We cannot stress enough how important it is to have drivers that are passionate and share the same values as the company. As such, we also ensure that our drivers are rewarded for their excellent performances,” added Rishinsa.

Rishinsa also found Scania to be a reliable business partner as both companies share similar business values and are both committed to reducing their carbon footprints. To maintain its competitive edge and emphasise on the sustainability of the business, Gateway Shipping signed up as the first Scania Ecolution partner in Pahang to further reduce their fleet’s fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In this partnership, Scania and Gateway Shipping are working towards having all of the Scania trucks in the fleet to lower its CO2 emission thus reducing the environmental impact.

Since the partnership was signed back in June 2019, Gateway Shipping has been walking the talk as the company managed to reduced its CO2 emissions by 32,000kg which is equivalent to planting approximately 1454 trees that has been flourishing for the past one year. Rishinsa is confident that the company can achieve higher reduction with proper guidelines and communications between Scania and Gateway Shipping. He is also looking forward to progress further with Scania Ecolution as his customers also appreciate the effort that the company is taking to reduce its carbon footprints.

“Sustainability in a business is a must in today’s current economy. It is crucial that companies take proactive measures to ensure they reduce the impact to the environment. But this does not mean that profitability will be reduced as sustainability and profitability can go hand-in-hand,” summarised Rishinsa.
