Biodiesel: Charting Kenya’s Transition towards Sustainable Transport
27 FEBRUARY 2026
On Tuesday, 24th February 2026, together with our partners Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi and TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya, we convened key stakeholders from the energy and transport sectors to explore the current status and future potential of biodiesel in Kenya. TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya shared valuable insights into their ongoing efforts in the market, including their capability to supply a wide range of biodiesel blends—from B5 all the way to B100—tailored to customers’ specific needs.
A significant part of the discussion centered around the motivations and challenges of transitioning to renewable fuels. Many participants raised concerns about the cost implications of adopting biodiesel. However, understanding why this shift is important is equally crucial. Biodiesel represents a practical and immediate step in Kenya’s broader journey toward sustainable mobility. While full electrification remains the long‑term goal, we recognize that we cannot leapfrog directly to it. Instead, transitioning through cleaner, renewable fuels like biodiesel offers a realistic pathway to reducing emissions today, building experience, and preparing the ecosystem for eventual electrification.
From Scania’s perspective, our commitment to championing renewable fuels is rooted in our belief that sustainability in transport requires collaboration. We emphasized the need to work closely with customers and with partners such as TotalEnergies to build an enabling environment that supports increased biodiesel uptake. By developing this ecosystem together, we open the door to new opportunities that will shape the future of our sector.
The potential ahead is immense, and this engagement marks an important first step toward growing Kenya’s biodiesel market. We look forward to more conversations, deeper collaboration, and meaningful partnerships that will accelerate our collective progress toward a cleaner transport future.
