Service Experts from Tanzania to Represent East Africa in the Scania Top Team Regional Final

15 JULY 2022

The NTG service team from Scania Tanzania emerged as the winners in the just concluded Scania Top Team East Africa National Final. As a result, the team will represent East Africa in the regional final set to take place in Bangkok, Thailand in February 2023.

Mary Mfuko, Kongo Mzinga, Mbaraka Waziri, Raphael Ndinya and Hussein Iddi, members of Team NTG took home the title of East Africa’s Top Team, with Team Kifaru from Kenya and Team Cranes 1 from Uganda coming in second and third place respectively. “This is a great accomplishment for our team because we competed with East Africa’s top teams,” highlights Kongo Mzinga, Team Leader, NTG.

“I am really proud that my team has won this prestigious title. They have put in many hours of training and they have developed their expertise and teamwork throughout the different stages of the competition. I hope that the success of these young skilled service experts will inspire other young people to look into a career in this industry,” says Jimmy Mikkelsen, Service Manager, Scania Tanzania.

Scania Top Team is a competition-like training programme and it has, true to Scania’s continuous improvement philosophy, been developed from a national training event more than 25 years ago into today’s global training programme. During the competition, the participating teams went through a full day of practical challenges which tested their ability to find and fix problems on a Scania product within a limited period. The five timed rounds of both theory and practical exercises had them tested on engine diagnosis and repair, the gearbox, the fuel system, and the electrical system of our vehicles, and in enhancing their team work, skills and speed, the teams had to complete each challenge within 20 minutes. “We had mixed feelings going through each station because it was a series of tough challenges which we had to solve, but through team work, we managed to win,” explains Kongo.

The aim of Top Team is to develop the skills of Scania’s service personnel and to help them enhance and increase their knowledge, professionalism and customer focus. It is also all about encouraging exceptional teamwork.

Additionally, the ultimate goal for Scania workshops worldwide is to provide high quality services for customers’, and this in turn requires a highly proficient service team, and through the competition, the skills, knowledge, professionalism and teamwork of the service teams are enhanced.

“We set up Top Team to encourage our service personnel to strive for excellence and to build their knowledge of Scania’s products and working tools. However, it is also about putting the spotlight on the unsung heroes who work tirelessly in our workshops to provide exceptional levels of service to our customers. Top Team gives them the chance to shine and to get the recognition they deserve,” says Rahim Khajebahri, Services Director, Scania East Africa.

Team NTG certainly demonstrated all these qualities, and their engineering, electronic and technology expertise coupled with a thorough understanding of Scania products and cohesive teamwork gave them the edge over their competitors.

If the team is successful in the regional round, they will be part of the world final which is scheduled to take place in April 2023 in Södertälje, Sweden, where the winning team will walk away with 50,000 EUR, and the title of Scania’s Top Team. “In the regional round, we will use this win as our motivation. Our aim is to reach the world finals, and through teamwork and preparation, we will accomplish this goal,” Kongo explains excitedly.
