Scania keeps Future Recycling coming back for more

Long-time Scania operator Future Recycling has added another string to its bow by winning a tender to deliver and collect bins used by the new container deposit scheme in Victoria.

Four Scania trucks are used to collect the bins 24/7, in addition to the trucks on regular bulk bin scrap metal collection. Two new Scania trucks have been delivered so far this year and Future Recycling Logistics Manager Tony Black has a couple of additional new Scanias on his wish list for the next 12 months.

“This year we have added a 460 hp and 560 hp to the fleet of 23 Scanias. We wanted the greater horsepower to tow a trailer to transport bins from regional areas, we are covering regional eastern Victoria locations in Morwell, Traralgon and Moe, so we needed a truck to provide extra power,” Tony says.

“All the drivers really enjoy driving the Scanias and they have served us well. We have two older trucks we will look to retire from the fleet in 2026. They have travelled 800,000 kms and 850,000 kms and continue to be reliable each day. We even had one Scania that we finally retired on 1.1 million kms. A great performance from a reliable and well-maintained truck.

“It is fair to say that the trucks have been durable and reliable for us over the long run and we get great service from the Scania Dandenong workshop. They look after all our servicing, all our repairs and maintenance. Once they’re out of the maintenance contract, we continue use the Scania workshop. You can see the benefit of keeping it purely Scania, the service team at Dandenong South know what they're doing and only use genuine parts,” Tony says.

“I think when you’re maintaining a fleet of Scania trucks, it’s impressive to get 1.1 million kms out of a truck and still have it going as a frontline truck. It’s a great result.

“We have used Scania Assist when we have a roadside breakdown and they've never failed us either. They communicate directly with the driver about timing and location via text message. If they can repair on site, they will. If they can't, they'll always help to get the truck back to the workshop and fixed up and back on the road,” he says.

In addition to a long-term service contract with Visy Recycling 18 months ago Future Recycling tendered and were successful in securing the services and provision of bulk bins for the container deposit scheme in the south east. While scrap metal transport and recycling is the core of the business, the transport and collection division of the company has grown steadily over time.

“We’re double shifting four of the Scanias. Shifts start at 1am and finish about mid-day and the second shift starts at 2pm and finishes at 11pm so the Scanias are on the road about 18 hours a day. They just keep going,” Tony says.
