SCANIA ELECTRIFIES ALBA W&H SMART CITY'S BUSINESS WITH A FLEET OF 15 BATTERY-ELECTRIC WASTE-COLLECTION TRUCKS

SINGAPORE – Scania Singapore is on track to deliver a fleet of 15 Scania CL20N battery-electric waste-collection trucks to ALBA W&H Smart City. Ten units have been delivered by the end of 2023, for deployment to collect general waste and recyclable items in the Woodlands-Yishun sector.

“This fleet of Scania battery-electric trucks has transformed how ALBA W&H Smart City performs essential waste collection at close to zero emissions,” said Oscar Wyckman, Country Manager of Scania Singapore. “These trucks are key to helping ALBA W&H Smart City meet their sustainability targets, being able to operate efficiently, safely, and quietly in densely populated areas."

The Scania CL20N battery-electric truck is capable of meeting ALBA W&H Smart City’s operational requirements, with optimised energy consumption, by overcoming the challenge of high energy demands typically required for refuse compaction and lifting operations.

In addition to fuel and emission reductions, the Scania battery-electric trucks introduce operational enhancements such as improved maneuverability due to a steerable last axle and a low-entry cabin. While producing almost zero emissions, they also reduce noise pollution significantly while operating.

To optimise safety, each truck for ALBA W&H Smart City comes with Traction Control and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) to complement the standard Electronic Braking System (EBS) with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). It is also equipped with other advanced driver-assistance systems – namely the Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Vulnerable Road User Collision Prevention features – to further enhance safety for the crew and other road users.

When the first Scania CL20N truck was handed-over on 14 June 2023, ALBA W&H Smart City became the first company to operate a European-branded battery-electric truck for waste collection in Singapore. The handover event was graced by Dr Amy Khor, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Transport, and Sustainability and the Environment.

“The choice came down to Scania having the best battery-electric truck that could do the job,” said Jakob Lambsdorff, CEO of ALBA W&H Smart City. “With the Scania CL20N, we are deploying a highly capable fleet of trucks that can handle similar high-energy route profiles as their diesel equivalents on a single battery charge with zero tailpipe emissions.”

He added: “We also like the strong after-sales service commitment, including the Repair & Maintenance contract that helps us stay ahead, and Scania’s Senoko workshop being fully equipped and knowledgeable to service and repair battery-electric trucks to ensure the highest vehicle productivity and uptime for our operations.”

By electrifying 15 trucks, ALBA W&H Smart City will save up to 2,700 tonnes of carbon-dioxide emissions per year. Starting with the Scania fleet, the company plans to replace its diesel trucks gradually to align with its goals for a ‘world without waste’ and for eco-conscious practices blended with technological innovation.

ALBA W&H Smart City is a joint venture between ALBA Group Asia and Wah & Hua in Singapore. The company is the NEA-appointed public waste collector for the Jurong and the Woodlands-Yishun sectors in Singapore. It is also the sole operator under NEA’s Producer Responsibility Scheme for electronic waste collection and management for the whole of Singapore.

The tenth unit of ALBA W&H Smart City’s fleet of Scania battery-electric trucks was delivered in December 2023.

“This fleet of Scania battery-electric trucks has transformed how ALBA W&H Smart City performs essential waste collection at close to zero emissions. These trucks are key to helping ALBA W&H Smart City meet their sustainability targets, being able to operate efficiently, safely, and quietly in densely populated areas," said Oscar Wyckman, Country Manager of Scania Singapore.

A full battery charge can take the vehicle at least 150 km, while performing lifting and compacting operations.

Since June 2023, the Scania battery-electric trucks have been hard at work collecting waste and recyclables in Woodlands and Yishun.

“The choice came down to Scania having the best battery-electric truck that could do the job. With the Scania CL20N, we are deploying a highly capable fleet of trucks that can handle similar high-energy route profiles as their diesel equivalents on a single battery charge with zero tailpipe emissions,” said Jakob Lambsdorff, CEO of ALBA W&H Smart City.

The low entry of the L-cab allows the crew to enter and leave the cab comfortably.

Lane Departure Warning is one of many safety features built into ALBA W&H Smart City’s Scania battery-electric trucks. It is also equipped with other Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems – namely Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Warning and Vulnerable Road User Collision Prevention.
