Staff spotlight with Andrew Ayears, Area Sales Manager
Area Sales Manager for our Western Region Andrew has spent the past thirty years in the commercial vehicle industry; entering through the technical route as an apprentice, but later finding that his niche lay in sales…..
How did you get into the industry and why?
“In 1988 I started working as an apprentice for Billows, a Volvo dealer based in Kettering. Initially I thought that technical work was the right path for me, but after spending time in the sales office I found that I loved it, and had a real interest in that side of the business. Luckily there was an opening at the time for a sales administrator - so I applied, got the role, and never looked back really. A few years later I was promoted to Sales Controller at Volvo, which meant that I was able to go out on the road meeting customers and selling for the first time, which was amazing. I stayed with Volvo for seven years, during which time I was head-hunted by IVECO, where I eventually worked for a while.
“In the late nineties my life took a new direction and I went travelling around the world for a year – I did a skiing season in Austria, and then travelled to South East Asia, Austria, and New Zealand. It really was a brilliant experience. I came back to the UK and managed to secure a job with TruckEast, where I’ve been ever since.”
What is your favorite thing about your job?
“The people – whether that be customers or colleagues. You have to enjoy interacting with lots of different people to want to work in sales.”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given
“Treat people how you want to be treated.”
What are your hobbies?
“Cycling is an all-encompassing passion of mine. I’ve raced since childhood, done lots of road and mountain biking, and also cross-country biking. I’ve been involved in cycling competitions and charity rides over the years. Many evenings and weekends are spent on the bike. My three kids race as well, it’s a real family affair.”
If you could rule the world for one day what would you do?
“I’d probably make Scania the only truck supplier in the world, and then my job would be very easy!”
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
“At TruckEast, developing the area further with the customers I work with, building contracts and making new vehicle sales.”
