Scania is fuel champion for Maritime Transport

Multi-modal specialist, Maritime Transport places its biggest single order yet with one manufacturer – 200 Next Generation Scania’s.

One year on, a leading combination of whole life cost, impressive fuel economy and driver acceptance see Felixstowe based Maritime Transport return to the Swedish marque with an order for 200 R450 tractor units.

Winner of the prestigious Freight Operator of the Year for the third year running at Multimodal Awards 2018, Maritime has specified the new trucks with an R Highline cab variant. Their economical 330kW (450hp) six-cylinder engines are paired with Scania’s smooth and efficient 2-pedal opticruise transmission and deliver 2,350 Nm torque with full SCR technology.

Whole life cost is key to the decision-making-process at Maritime; with fuel consumption being the biggest weighted element in the mix. It’s been one year since Maritime took their first five next-generation Scania’s and although still early days in the 5-year life cycle, the Scania’s have got a fuel advantage on the fleet.

Fleet Director, Stuart Wardlaw explains, “Our work can be so varied that usually comparing a vehicles mpg performance to another is difficult. To allow us to make an informed decision we undertook a track trial with the latest products across our fleet. As part of this, we eliminated as many variables as possible e.g. container size, load weight, journey etc. When it came to fuel economy the Scania’s out-performed the other marque.”

“This alongside all other factors of the whole life cost of the vehicles was the deciding factor when placing our order for the 200 Scania R-Series.”

Specification of the truck itself is important to Maritime to ensure a certain standard of driver welfare, especially where sometimes on-road facilities are not up-to-scratch. The spacious R Cabs, which are fitted with fridges and microwave ovens, provide both a comfortable working and living space for its drivers.

“From our perspective when they have got their vehicles we want out drivers to have access to everything they could need - space, storage and home comforts,” comments Stuart.

Keeping their drivers happy is two-fold for Maritime – believing not only will it impact retention but the performance they see out of the vehicles themselves. Stuart continues, “A driver’s acceptance of a vehicle has a direct link to their behaviour and performance. When they are happy with the vehicle they are driving, we believe they will drive more economically and safely.”

As a growing business Maritime utilises staff feedback to shape future decisions, including a suggestion outlet called ‘Dear John’. The feedback from drivers on the next generation Scania trucks has been positive and overall well received.

“It really is a great truck; the overall vision of your surroundings is brilliant which gives you so much more confidence on the road. The drive is smooth, quiet and responsive and due to the interior design, you can get to everything without taking your hands off the steering wheel. Not only can you do the job, but in style and comfort too,” comments Maritime Driver, Andy Parsons.

With a fleet that covers 100 million miles a year and working in an industry that operates 24/7, Maritime relies on its fleet of 1,200 trucks to deliver excellence to its customers.

The new vehicles, which are being prepared and delivered through Scania Dealer, TruckEast’s Stowmarket branch, will be based across various Maritime sites in the UK, the first of which went on the road early June.

The latest order is a testament to the open partnership with both Scania as a manufacturer and also local dealer TruckEast. Operating in a highly demanding environment, Maritime pride themselves on meeting the set ETA’s of their customer base and it’s their fleet that enables them to deliver those expectations.

Established in 2001, Maritime has grown to become one of the largest privately-owned multi-modal transport businesses in the UK. Its roots lie as container haulier but they have since diversified into distribution, warehousing, rail-ports, container storage and freight management. Maritime enjoys partnerships with customers across various sectors but specialises in shipping from major UK ports and supporting retail customers. Its UK network, now with 35 locations, delivers a consistent quality service – handling anything from a single container to a complete supply chain solution.
