Supporting charities and the wider community
Scania Financial Services UK has always understood the importance of contributing to the wider community and 2020 was no exception. Members of staff were involved with putting forward charity suggestions to receive the company’s annual donation, which were then put to a vote. Willen Hospice in Milton Keynes and Cancer Research UK were the chosen charities for this year’s donations.
Since 2019, the company has given over £20,000 of donations to 6 UK charities with the value of the contribution based on how many new Scania assets were financed. Other ways we have looked to support charities have been through the Scania Financial Services’ volunteer scheme that allows employees to allocate 15 hours a year to supporting charities of their choice. Whilst Covid-19 has restricted the usual fundraising activities, the team have continued to support their chosen charities and look forward to being able to do more when lockdown is lifted. The company supports individual fundraising by increasing amounts raised up to a value.
Although charities have still been fundraising online, many of them have suffered from a reduction in donations because of the pandemic. Willen Hospice, one of the two charities chosen for the donation, needs to raise £4.7m a year to continue to provide specialist end of life care to patients and their families. Based in Milton Keynes, close to Scania Financial Services UK’s Head Office, it is the only adult care hospice in the area and has been providing compassionate care for the terminally ill for over 40 years. There are around 367,000 new cancer cases diagnosed in the UK every year and staff chose Cancer Research UK as their second charity because it affects so many families.
“We recognise many people have faced hard times over the past 12 months and we are delighted to continue to support charities that our team are passionate about” explained Alan Rhodes, Managing Director “giving back has never seemed more important and we are committed to our charitable contribution again this year”.
