The YETD-winner’s truck

The 2012 winner of Scania’s Young European Truck Driver competition, Gabriel Warde of Ireland, has now decided on his prize truck. Comfort and fuel economy are its most important attributes.

The prize for the winner of Young European Truck Driver 2012 is a truck valued at EUR 100,000. The winner may personally specify the truck to suit his needs. This year’s winner, Gabriel Warde will continue to be employed as a truck driver at Cummer Transport and therefore wants to sell the winner’s truck.

Gabriel Warde wants to sell the winner’s truck, that is why he took his employer John Collins, CEO of Cummer Transport, along with him to look at the specification of the winner’s truck.

“I enjoy my work and am happy to have a permanent job in these tough times. We’ll have to see what happens, perhaps I’ll get the chance to drive my winner’s truck anyway,” says Warde.

This is why Warde took John Collins, CEO of Cummer Transport, along with him to Scania in order to look at the specification of the winner’s truck.

Fuel economy most important

For Collins, low fuel consumption is the single most important factor for an efficient fleet.

“It has a direct effect on the bottom line, so you have to be observant. We also care about the driver environment. There has to be a bed in the truck so drivers can rest during their breaks,” says Collins.

Warde was also looking for a comfortable ride in his prize truck.

“There are many stops during a day, so driver comfort is very important. When we collect milk at farms, there can be muddy gravel roads and it can be very tight,” says Warde.

Order placed for Scania R 500

After considering several options, Warde placed an order for a white Scania R 500 LA4x2. The truck will most probably be built during the second week of January 2013 for delivery in February.

Eric Treacy, sales representative at the Westward Scania dealership in Strokestown, County Roscommon, Ireland, was helping Gabriel to calculate the various alternatives.

“It’s always important to start with customer needs when we propose a solution. We carefully reviewed the options and talked about what may be important to achieve the best possible solution for Cummer Transport’s needs,” says Treacy.
