The Danish national final for Scania’s Young European Truck Driver competition was a tightly contested affair. Lars Søndergård, 32, was the ultimate winner after he excelled in manoeuvring, defensive driving and the securing of cargo.
Lars Søndergård is an old hand at Scania driver competitions. He competed in the Danish national final in 2012, finishing second in a tight competition. This year, his persistence, along with his steady performance in challenges including first aid and check before driving, paid off and he walked away Danish national champion.
Road safety awareness
As always, the focus for the competition was on highlighting and increasing awareness in areas such as road safety and economical driving.
Eight drivers made it to the Danish final, which was staged in conjunction with the Ishøj Truck Show in Copenhagen. The three drivers on the podium – Søndergård, Daniel Jordan and Simon H. Nielsen – all excelled in most of the disciplines, making the final a true nail-biter.
Søndergård runs his own transport business, while Jordan works for Arla Foods and Nielsen for Post Danmark.
European final in April 2015
Following his victory, Søndergård will represent Denmark in the European final, which is taking place in Södertälje, Sweden, in April 2015. The event will see 25 drivers competing for a brand new Scania truck and a wide array of other prizes.
