Trips and visits, meetings with customers and Scania colleagues on four continents. The first 100 days as President and CEO of Scania have been hectic for Martin Lundstedt. Today you can follow him in the western hemisphere.

Martin Lundstedt met the management of US-based Cummins – Scania’s strategic partner in engine technology – in Columbus, Indiana during two days in October, together with his predecessor Leif Östling, among other people.

The purpose of this annual top-level meetings is to discuss continued long-term collaboration. Scania and Cummins jointly develop and produce extreme high-pressure fuel injection systems, which have been one of Scania’s weapons in meeting the increasingly stringent Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards.

 

São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, 5 November

During a visit at Scania’s main South American factory and Latin American head office in São Bernardo do Campo, near São Paulo, Brazil’s leading business newspaper Valor Econômico conducted a major interview with Scania’s new President and CEO. Among other things, the questions and answers dealt with how Scania works to develop products and services to reduce CO2 emissions.

Amid the large sugar cane fields of the Brazilian state of São Paulo, Lundstedt visited Cocal, a Scania customer. The company produces and sells sugar and other sugar cane-based products such as ethanol. Its own power generating plant, which uses residual products, also produces electricity for more than 100,000 local residents.

“Cocal is a very exciting sugar cane customer for Scania, with 400 trucks that perform all its haulage work,” Lundstedt explains. He had an opportunity to discuss with Cocal’s management how the company’s logistic solutions might be further improved.

Buenos Aires, Argentina, 7 November

During his trip around Latin America, Lundstedt also visited the head office of Scania Argentina in Buenos Aires.

During an informal lunch together with all employees, the year’s Scania Communications Award was presented. Scania Argentina won this coveted Group-wide prize for its efforts to build relationships with the next generation of Scania customers in Argentina.

“This long-term project represents an outstanding example of how to manage generation changes among Scania customers. The project is scalable and may be adapted to the needs of other markets, but it may also be deployed to manage generation changes among Scania dealers”, the new Scania President and CEO summarised the prize jury’s explanation of its choice.

Before continuing his South American journey, Lundstedt also had time for a brief visit to Baisur Motor, Scania’s dealership in the Argentine capital.

In northern Chile, Scania supplies an unusual transport solution to one of the world’s largest copper mines – coaches. These coaches transport the 2,200 employees around the far-flung mining area, but also between the coastal city of Antofagasta and the mine, located more than 3,000 metres above sea level. Early in November, Scania’s new President and CEO travelled in one of these coaches.

“The logistics solution for mining operations here is really impressive,” he said, before discussions with the Minera Escondida mining company about other products and services that Scania can contribute to the mining industry today.

 

Santiago, Chile, 9 November

During a visit to the Pudahuel bus terminal in the Chilean capital, Santiago, Lundstedt had an opportunity to look closely at how Scania handles servicing and maintenance there – in the customer’s workshop.

“I would like very much to see what we else can do to help this type of customer achieve even higher uptime for buses,” he said.

Scania is delivering 231 city buses for Transantiago, which has provided successful public transport solutions in the Chilean capital since being established in 2007.

Scania’s customer, Alsacia Express, has extensive experience as a provider of bus services in various integrated public transport systems in Latin America. Of the company’s 1,942 city buses, 12 per cent are from Scania.
