It came as quite a surprise to Vlastimil Schimmel of the Czech Republic when he was announced the winner of the Scania CO2NTROL CUP 2018. As one of nearly 2,200 drivers who completed the competition, he had also helped save almost 140,000 liters of diesel and 400,000 kilogrammes of C02 over a three-month period thanks to the low fuel consumption of the Scania vehicles.
Schimmel had only stepped inside a Scania R 500 for the first time just a few weeks before the competition began. But now it seems he won’t be stepping out in a hurry. “Scania really fits me. I used to drive another vehicle, but after the shift to the R 500, my fuel consumption dropped by almost 4 litres per 100 kilometres on the same route, with the same cargo and the same engine power,” he says. His top results came down to indicators such as efficiency of driving, idling and Scania Driver Support.
How Scania connected services and professional driver training helps
Scania’s professional driver training enables drivers to become more efficient and better drivers, which reduces the risk of traffic accidents.

The Scania Fleet Management System (FMS) allows for easy management of the fleet and remote vehicle diagnostics. The driving and performance parameters of the vehicles can be compared to find out where to work on efficiency.
Economic and environmental outcome – the stats
In the end, the Scania CO2NTROL CUP 2018 helped to save EUR 11,724,511. Before the start of competition, the average consumption of the 2,181 registered vehicles in the CER combined (758 in the Czech Republic, 543 in Slovakia and 880 in Hungary) was 27.3 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. Over the course of three months, it dropped to 26.6 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. This reduction was about 140,000 litres of diesel in terms of mileage.
“VELU Trans promised that if I won, I’d get a new, well equipped Scania S. And they have already placed an order. I’m really lost for words, I did not expect victory at all. But I wanted it, and I wanted to visit the Scania factory,” Schimmel explains.
