Background:
Scania is undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions. As part of that strive, the exhaust aftertreatment system is an important component to minimize the environmental impact from the individual trucks.

The aftertreatment system in a Scania truck is a complex system, with different components targeting specific pollutants. One of the components is the diesel particulate filter (DPF), which aims to minimize emissions of harmful particles to the environment. The soot particles formed in the engine are trapped and burned in the filter leaving a small amount of ash behind. In order for the DPF to work in an optimal way it is important to know how the soot reacts in the filter. How easy a soot burns depends on  among other things on the conditions under which the soot is formed. This project aims at studying the oxidation behavior of soot formed under different conditions in the engine in order to be able to optimize the exhaust system.

Scania have recently acquired an advanced TGA-FTIR-GCMS instrument with which the reactivity of the soot can be studied under various atmospheres simulating real exhaust conditions. From those data the reactivity of the various soot types can be estimated.    

Target:
The target of the thesis project is to be able to improve the performance of the DPF by better understanding the oxidation behaviour of soot in the filter.

Assignment:
In this thesis project you will study the reactivity of different types of soot and define a strategy for soot characterisation using TGA that could be used to compare different soot types, starting with a review of the state of the art techniques, followed by sampling and analysis of actual soot samples. This work will be in close contact with different experts on soot formation and exhaust aftertreatment at Scania and KTH.

You will work in a dedicated team of driven experts in the field of exhaust aftertreatment.

The work will be performed at Scania Materials Technology in Södertälje with cooperation with the department of Chemical Engineering Technology and the department of Machine Design at KTH.

Time frame:
Recruitment will be conducted continuously from the posting of this ad and the position might be filled earlier than the final date stated in the add. The thesis is a master thesis to be conducted in 20 weeks, starting first quarter of 2020.

MSc/Civilingenjör in: Chemical Engineering, Materials Technology or Engineering Physics.
