1977: Proposed merger fails

A press conference is held to announce that Volvo Corporation and Saab-Scania are to merge. The move is prompted by a situation where the Swedish automotive industry with small automakers such as Volvo and Saab is threatened. But the plan for potentially one of the most notable events in Swedish industrial history fails to materialise, having met stiff opposition both within Scania and Saab-Scania’s Car Division. Scania takes the view that it is more than capable of holding its own, and that the market shares of both companies will decrease following a merger.
