Vagnfabriks Aktiebolaget i Södertelge (Vabis) is established in December 1891. The company is founded jointly by engineer and industrialist Philip Wersén and Surahammars bruk, a centuries-old ironworks. A factory and workshops are built at the northern end of the Saltskog inlet in Södertälje, a strategic site by a railway junction and close to Södertälje Canal, a main artery providing access from the Baltic Sea to a large number of ports in Lake Mälaren. Before long the company is known familiarly as “Vagnfabriken”. Its main products are open goods wagons, baggage cars, passenger carriages and horse-drawn trams.
