Scania XPI (extra high pressure injection)

Scania XPI (extra high pressure injection) is a Scania-designed common rail fuel injection system that makes continuous, precise adjustments to ensure optimal fuel delivery. The system varies the volume and timing of injection, thereby minimising consumption and emissions without restricting torque build-up. With Scania XPI, pressure can be set independently of engine speed, with exceptional precision.

Scania VGT (variable-geometry turbocharger)

The geometry and gas flow in the Scania VGT (variable-geometry turbocharger) is regulated by an electric actuator. This allows precise control of both charge-air to the engine, to boost low-speed engine power, and the flow of recirculated exhaust gases on EGR engines. The intake airflow can be optimised throughout the rev range. This means that the VGT helps to improve engine response and low-speed torque by maintaining the turbine speed while the gearchanges are being made.

Scania engine management system

To secure control of all aspects of engine performance, as well as the exhaust aftertreatment system for Euro 6, Scania has developed a new generation of engine management systems. All functions are controlled by the engine management system, which also provides advanced on-board diagnostics and allows detailed logging of operational data for subsequent analysis.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR)

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with a urea-based additive, AdBlue, ensures that exhaust gases are released with minimal nitrogen oxide content. When AdBlue is injected into the exhaust, a reaction takes place in a catalytic converter, which is integrated in the silencer.

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) reduces emissions during combustion, directly in the combustion chamber. Scania EGR lowers nitrogen oxide emissions by cooling and reusing a portion of the exhaust gases. Scania EGR can decrease the amount of AdBlue needed, meaning smaller tanks and more space on the chassis. Whether on the open road, on the construction site or in the city, Scania EGR effectively reduces emissions in all conditions.

Scania particulate filter

A particulate filter is used in Euro 6 exhaust systems. It reduces particles and soot, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxides in the exhaust gases. The latest generation of filters, integrated in the Scania Euro 6 exhaust aftertreatment system, is designed to regenerate continuously while driving. A forced regeneration can be activated by the driver at standstill.

Oxicat

The oxidising catalyst is part of the Euro 6 aftertreatment system. It prepares the exhaust gases for subsequent stages in the exhaust flow by balancing NO and NO2 levels. It uses a catalytic process without any additives and is fully integrated in the compact Euro 6 silencer unit.

Gas engine Multi-point injection & combustion principle

The injection system with two injectors for each cylinder always ensures the optimum mix of fuel and air. The gas is led into each injector located in the respective cylinder’s induction pipe. The injection system adapts itself to different gas qualities and can handle both biogas and natural gas with different Wobbe indices. The Scania gas engines work according to the Otto principle with spark ignition. The Scania-developed ignition system ensures continuous engine control to maximise engine performance and high torque at low revs. Together with a 3-way oxidation catalyst this results in very low emissions and reduced noise.

Hybrid powertrain

The Scania hybrid Euro 6 powertrain utilises an electric propulsion system in combination with a traditional combustion engine. The truck can be run in full electric mode as well as with biofuels such as FAME and HVO, achieving an 18% fuel reduction on a typical city distribution cycle.

Ethanol engine

The current ethanol engine is the fourth generation of Scania diesel-ethanol engines. It is an adaptation of Scania’s 9-litre diesel engine with charge air cooling, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and the Scania-developed charge air temperature control system for optimal engine performance. The engine uses compression ignition just as a diesel engine with virtually the same fuel efficiency.

Scania Opticruise

An automated gear changing system benefits drivers and operators in several ways. Besides improving comfort and eliminating the need to watch revs and change gears, it enables the driver to devote more attention to handling the vehicle and to other traffic.

The gearchanging strategy is designed to adapt to the environment continually by taking factors such as road inclination, trailer weight and engine characteristics into account. As well as rocking mode, clutch overload warning system and manoeuvre mode that will serve as good companions during the journey.

To meet the customers demand on a premium gearshift Scania's new Opticruise features high gearshift speed in combination with excellent comfort.

Retarder

Scania’s retarder lets the driver appreciate the powerful, yet smooth, effect of a hydraulic retarder. Besides comfort and a relaxing drive, it also provides savings by reducing the need for normal brake system maintenance. We normally recommend to use a retarder when vehicles are operating on hilly roads or braked frequently at higher speeds in flat topography.

Active prediction

Combining Opticruise with Scania's active prediction will enable you to save even more fuel because the system uses GPS to predict the topography of the road ahead, then adjusts the cruise speed before an ascent or descent accordingly. The system has been proven to save up to 2 percent of fuel with less than a two-minute loss during a full day’s driving.

ERGONOMICS AND COMFORT

The driving position in a Scania cab will suit everybody. A wide range of adjustments gives maximum scope for drivers to find exactly the right position for a comfortable, relaxed posture. With a firm grip on the wheel, every principal control is within fingertip reach. The steering column position is also adjustable. Visibility around the vehicle requires no more than small movements of the head if not a mere flick of the eyes.

The distinctive curved Scania dashboard is available in two lengths, according to the amount of equipment you want in your truck. Everything fits perfectly, and is placed with extreme care.

A well-rested driver is a better driver

Enjoy a good night’s sleep in the comfortable 800 mm bed with foam, bonnell or pocket-spring mattress. For extra spacious comfort, the pocket-spring mattress is also available as extendable bed up to 1,000 mm. The spacious upper bed compartment has room for a comfortable 600-800 mm mattress, depending on the cab type.

 

AERODYNAMICS

Wind-tunnel testing is used to refine every surface, every curve and every piece of exterior equipment for optimal aerodynamic performance. The overall shape of the cab is also designed this way. A gradually tapered front end gives the cab a wedge-shaped profile that significantly reduces drag.

Another key factor in airflow optimisation is the cab’s ability to cope with cross-winds. The large radius curves around the entirety of the cab help to achieve this while reducing road spray and internal wind noise.

For a final, but optional aerodynamic touch, side and roof air deflectors may also be attached to the cab. The new generation trucks comes with improved roof and side air deflectors, as well as an improved cab front design that reduces air drag.
