Scania extends its gas offering with powerful 13-litre gas trucks for sustainable solutions

  • Scania is now offering the OC13, a six-cylinder gas engine with 410 hp
  • Good capacity for heavy, long-haul transport due to characteristics that are similar to those of a diesel engine; giving a range of up to 1,000 kilometres in conjunction with LNG.
  • Scania’s updated OC09 gas engine is also introduced

Scania recently introduced a ground breaking Euro 6 gas engine at the Italian trade fair Ecomondo. With a power output of 410 hp, the OC13 can be used for both long-haul transport and construction operations, due to performance that is comparable to that of a diesel engine. The newly-developed Euro 6 gas engine is based on Scania’s 13-litre engine and is the latest addition to Scania’s offer for sustainable transport solutions, offering CO2 reductions of 15-90%

“We have great hopes for trucks with this unique 13-litre engine,” says Henrik Eng, Director Urban, Scania Trucks. “There is considerable interest among prospective customers around Europe in being able to run vehicles such as long-distance vehicles on gas, and this engine meets these needs in all respects. There is demand from customers for a solution that provides all the advantages of gas, such as better total operating economy, and none of the disadvantages,“ he says.

The new 410 hp engine provides 2,000 Nm from 1,100 through to 1,400 r/min – figures that compare well with diesel engines of a similar size. With liquefied natural gas (LNG), a typical semi-trailer combination of up to 40 tonnes can travel 1,000 kilometres without refuelling. With twin LNG tanks, the range can be as much as 1,600 kilometres.

Scania’s new 13-litre 410 hp gas engine with a torque of 2,000 Nm from 1,000 r/min has all the power and range (with LNG tanks) required for long-haul transport with typical semi-trailer combinations.

“Until now, most gas engines have either been too weak or had too limited a range to be really useful for heavier operations,” says Zoran Stojanovic, Product Manager Gas, Scania Trucks. “But Scania has solved these issues with this gas engine and can now offer reduced CO2 levels as well as increased customer profitability.
