SOLUTION
The results of our analysis help frame our common goal. We work towards a fuel consumption target by taking action within the following areas.
Optimised specification
The vehicle is specified to perform in a way that reduces fuel consumption without compromising efficiency. The process covers choice of engine, gearing, air deflectors, support systems and possible usage of alternative fuels such as biogas, ethanol or biodiesel.
Powertrain
An optimised powertrain means that the engine together with the gearbox and rear axle are matched to perform at their best – with respect both to fuel efficiency and expected workload.
Air Deflectors
Air deflectors improve the aerodynamics of the vehicle and reduce air resistance significantly. Both roof and side air deflectors are available in different sizes, and the choice of deflector depends on the particular transport task.

ALTERNATIVE FUELS
One way to further reduce CO2 emissions is through the use of alternative fuels. Biodiesel, gas, RME and ethanol are examples of viable alternatives and Scania is committed to increasing the use of these, dependent on the customers’ needs.

GEARING
Specifying the right gearbox and gear axle ratio will optimise the engine revs according to your transport profile. Scania Opticruise will automatically choose the most efficient gear.
OPTIMISED DRIVING
Education is a long-term investment. But when it comes to driver training, the results are immediate, boosting your drivers and business in ways you may not be aware of or think possible. Both new and seasoned drivers will see lasting improvements.
THE TRAINING STARTS
Almost immediately after Scania Driver Training starts, the driver will start driving defensively, reducing fuel consumption by up to 10%.

OLD DRIVING PATTERNS
After initial driver training, it’s still easy to slide back in to old habits, no matter how good the effects were at the start.

FEEDBACK – INSTANTLY AND MONTHLY
The driver gets instant feedback on their performance. A coach will call the driver one month after the initial training with feedback based on information received from their vehicle’s telematics unit. Ongoing monthly feedback will ensure continuing development – and reduce fuel consumption.

SUPPORT SYSTEMS
Systems such as Scania Active Prediction and Scania Driver Support assist the driver in driving the vehicle in a way that delivers the lowest possible fuel consumption.
OPTIMISED MAINTENANCE
We ensure that the vehicle remains in the best possible condition with a specially designed agreement. The checkpoints are additions to a regular maintenance programme, including checks of tyre pressure and tyre status, axle alignment, air deflector adjustment, and more.
AIR DEFLECTOR ADJUSTMENT
Wind tunnel and fuel tests all show that a vehicle’s fuel consumption is greatly affected by the roof air deflector height in relation to the bodywork. The angle of the air deflector is optimised at the workshop.

TYRE STATUS
Under or over inflation of the tyres can be costly and even dangerous. Correct tyre pressure secures low-rolling resistance and the lowest fuel consumption and as a consequence a long life length of the tyres.

AXLE ALIGNMENT
Axles that are not aligned will increase fuel consumption. Measuring the axle and wheel alignment and adjusting if needed will reduce wear, and in the long run costs, through increased tyre life length. One degree of misalignment usually means more than 1% higher fuel consumption.
CONTINUOUS FOLLOW-UP
Key to reaching the target is tight teamwork between both parties. Scania takes the lead in all work requiring your involvement, keeping you up to date with monthly progress reports. This is followed by quarterly meetings to discuss ways to improve overall performance.
SETTING THE TARGET
Your existing operation establishes a reference fuel consumption. The analysis then suggests a target fuel consumption that is jointly agreed upon. Collaboration is key, and Scania takes the lead in the continuous performance-improvement work.

MONTHLY REPORT
Every month you will receive a progress report on your reference fuel consumption and the target fuel consumption.

REVIEW MEETING
Every third month we meet and look at overall performance, discussing areas of improvement and defining activities to make continuous improvements.
