Howzat! MFB victorious in interstate bash vs NSW
The Scania-sponsored Melbourne Fire Brigade Cricket Club ventured to Sydney to take on their similarly Scania-sponsored NSW counterparts, in the inaugural Fire Brigade charity clash.
In pristine conditions at the picturesque Birchgrove Oval with its Sydney Harbour Bridge views, the two teams took to the field to battle for the inter-state title.
Despite having lost the toss and being sent in, the MFB team posted a highly respectable 160 runs in 40 overs for the loss of 9 wickets. A hearty lunch separated the two innings, and when the NSW team took to the field, and set about the run chase, the Vics felt in danger of a rout, with 25 runs on the board after just 5 overs.
Fortunately, the Vics’ bowling attack rediscovered its mettle and pushed the score to 5/33, with NSW finally all out for just 76.
The next outing for the cricketing fire fighters will be the Police and Fire Games T20 competition, where the Scania-emblazoned shirts will no doubt continue to attract their fair share of admirers.
Victorious Vics: (l-r) Daniel Bell, Norm Lu, Luke Duthie, Graeme McGuinness, Nick Lefbvre, Wal Wilson, Matt Hunter, Dale O’Donnell, Brad Cullen, Matt Ford, and Laurie Heath.
