The way we work

Scania strives to ensure a sustainable society in the long term and thus attaches great importance to human welfare, good workplace health and safety, respect for the environment and sound business ethics. Promoting sustainability is a natural element of Scania’s day-to-day work.

Sustainability work is integrated into Scania’s corporate governance structure based on Scania’s core values as well as the company’s management philosophy and policies. An ethical approach to work and business is the responsibility of every employee.

Effective management and monitoring

The commitment to following the OECD Guidelines applies to the entire Group. The same applies to the Environmental Policy and Human Resource Policy, which are established by the Scania Executive Board. The Executive Board sets overall strategies - operational decisions are made in the line organisation. Every manager is responsible for ensuring that Scania lives up to its obligations.

To ensure continuous monitoring and reporting of environmental performance in the production network, Scania has an internal reporting system that encompasses all production units as well as research and development units. Indicators and key figures are reported quarterly at management meetings in the line organisation and annually to the Executive Board.

The Scania Environmental Committee under the leadership of Corporate Relations coordinates environmental work and develops long-term strategies concerning environmental issues.

Management systems

Scania’s management system integrates procedures for quality and environmental management and provides the structure in which every operating unit systematically improves its performance.

Every Scania production unit, as well as its research and development units and corporate units, are certified according to ISO 14001 international environmental management standards. Twenty percent of the production units are also certified according to ISO 18001 occupational health and safety standards. The other units follow the same working methods and principles even though they are not yet certified by a third party.

In the Scania sales and service organisation, environmental work is part of the Dealer Operating Standard (DOS), which is monitored in regular audits.

The Management System Committee under the leadership of Corporate Control coordinates the Scania Management System. The committee prepares the annual unit management review and develops common ways of working and long-term strategies concerning the development of the management systems at Scania.

Common items of business are prepared by the Scania Environmental Committee, where environmental coordinators from various operations meet under the leadership of the Quality and Environment Department.

Updated on market needs

Transport is vital to modern society, and Scania plays an important part in providing it. To meet the demands of the market in terms of performance, life cycle cost, as well as quality and environmental characteristics, Scania maintains a close dialogue and working relationships with customers, political leaders, public authorities and other social institutions.

The resulting input is then included in the yearly update of Scania’s strategies.
