Alternative fuels

Gas can be used for fuelling heavy vehicles, where biogas as a renewable fuel shows especially good emission characteristics. The new 9-litre gas engines from Scania offer great possibilities to take advantage of these benefits.

Gas propulsion is often favoured by operators and public authorities for several reasons. If the biogas is supplied locally, for instance from waste or sewage plants, gas operation has excellent emission reduction properties, with a carbon dioxide reduction of at least 70% (according to EU Directive 2009/28/EC).

Natural gas is not an ideal replacement for diesel since it is still a fossil fuel, although emissions of regulated substances are handily reduced, with a gas supply infrastructure in place, biogas may well be the perfect solution for urban applications.

Scania offers two 5-cylinder, 9-litre gas engines with 270 and 305 hp.
