For Scania as a vehicle manufacturer, it is natural to work with alternative fuels. In the short and medium-term, this means ethanol or gas for city buses. The requirements on performance and fuel-availability for coaches, still makes ordinary diesel oil necessary as fuel. To decrease carbon intensity, the diesel fuel can be blended with biodiesel, like RME. In the long term second generation biodiesel and synthetic diesel oil made from biomass are promising alternatives.
Scania is the world’s largest manufacturer of ethanol-powered city buses. The ethanol diesel buses are all ordinary city-buses building on proven and reliable Scania technology. Around 500 ethanol diesel buses have been delivered since the start in 1990, mainly for the Swedish market. The main reason to use ethanol diesel buses is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Australia is at present Scania’s largest market for gas-powered buses. The decision to purchase methane gas-powered buses is due to high environmental requirements and good availability of methane gas.
